Physical Fitness Should Start Early

As the world changes, things get easier and easier. Sometimes you can run everything in your home without getting out of your chair. You can program your appliances to work at a certain time, you can change your television with a remote, your computer can turn your lights on and off, and I’m sure pretty soon there will be some way to pay the pizza guy and bring in the pizza without getting up out of your recliner. As the world gets more technologically advanced, our physical fitness gets worse. Because we have so many things that do stuff for us, we don’t have to do as much as we used to. Our bodies suffer.

Physical fitness should start in elementary school, and should carry on throughout life. I remember that running around in gym class when I was very young was one of the best parts of my day. If there were any kids in my class that were overweight, I don’t remember them, at least not at that age. This has changed, as you can see if you walk by any grammar school. Kids just don’t get the physical fitness they need, and it’s not so much their fault as it is everyone’s fault. The kids don’t know any better.

If your school is cutting back on physical fitness programs, both gym class and extra curricular sports, make sure you make a fuss. These are just as important as anything else. We all know by now the risks of being overweight, and this is not something you want for your children. The more they move around and learn to love sport and exercise when they are young, the more likely they will be to stay interested in physical fitness when they reach adulthood.

You should also worry about physical fitness at home. You don’t have to throw in a DVD and make your children do aerobics. In fact, this may just make them feel ‘fat’ and will kill their self-esteem. Instead, get the whole family moving by walking together, and playing outside together as much as possible. Don’t mention losing weight, just mention that everyone needs to be healthy and you need to get moving to do so. Physical fitness is not something that comes in one easy package; it is more something that you do all day every day. Every little bit helps, and everyone in your home will benefit.
