Tips For Aerobic Exercise

There is an absolute wealth of materials on aerobic exercise available, so if you decide that you want to do some of it, no matter is it just to keep you fit or to lose some extra weight you have, those materials will help you find the ideal workout program. What I can say about aerobic exercise is that ever since I first started with it I’ve been feeling much happier and healthier. Before that I had a sedentary life and I was feeling mostly miserable, but things changed.

Thanks to those programs I got more friends, I had better sexual life and I was much more energetic. I’ve been also feeling fitter and more attractive than ever before, even at the time I was 18(that’s supposed to be the prime of one’s life) I didn’t feel half this healthy. Now thanks to aerobic exercise I feel great.

Aerobic exercises can be quite different!

From all the available aerobic exercise programs it is absolutely crucial to get the right one that will suit you best. Jogging for example is known to be the most straight forward aerobic exercise and along with that it is amongst the simplest ones available, but unfortunately it’s not for me. I just hate it. Generally an aerobic exercise is an exercise that gets your blood pumping faster and harder. This is the main reason those exercises are so good for the heart and for your overall health.

However aerobic exercises can be quite different. There are the so called high-impact exercises that can cause tear and wear on your joints and tendons. Most of them do get good results in the short-term aspect but in the long-term they turn out to be doing more damages than help. Jogging is one of those high-impact exercises. Other exercises though do a really good job getting the heart beat faster but only exercise limited muscle groups – usually the legs.

The last but not least important thing about that online aerobic exercise program was that not including close supervision of the classes, it was offered at quite a reasonable price, unlike lots of other aerobic exercise programs.

What I found was a program that had neither of the above mentioned minuses, and I found it online. For my greatest surprise that training program was so designed that it developed a kind of full body workout. The training routines were so combined that they were creating strength and flexibility along with making you feel healthier. There was also a feed back from a personal trainer included, that helped me for feeling better than ever before. From the very beginning of that online aerobic exercise program I was also eating and sleeping better, and all that mixed together really enhanced my wellbeing.

In addition you also get useful tips for your diet, encouraging messages every single day and an e-mail address to send your questions to the personal trainer. Believe it or not it even offered a live video chat with other enthusiasts from all over the country, twice a month.

The Automated External Defibrillator: Become Aquainted With It - Before You Need To

The automated external defibrillator is a computerized medical device, the sole purpose of which is to restart a person's heart after they have suffered cardiac arrest. When conductive pads or "paddles" from the machine, are placed on the victim's body, the defibrillator can detect and monitor the heart beat to determine if defibrillation is necessary. If it is, after a short set up time, it will deliver an electric shock through the chest wall to the heart in an attempt to "kick start" it back into a normal, healthy rhythm.

Definition

If you are unfamiliar with defibrillators, and unsure of the term “defibrillation”, here is a brief explanation. Sudden cardiac arrest is, as the name suggests, the sudden cessation of a regular heartbeat. When a victim suffers sudden cardiac arrest it is often due to an arrhythmia (a fluttering, chaotic, and very weak "beating" of the heart muscle). It can be triggered by various things, such as:

When the heart is in this condition it is "fibrillating" (the noun is "fibrillation"). The defibrillator attempts to stop this fibrillation. It does this with an electric shock, that shuts down the heart momentarily and allows it to "reboot" and recalibrate to a stable rhythm.

The defibrillator can actually determine for the rescuer (by analyzing the heartbeat - or lack of one) whether or not CPR is a good idea, and then audibly direct him or her through the process. It can also determine if defibrillation is needed, and again, walk the rescuer through the steps necessary.

History

Defibrillators are not new. In fact they were first used in the mid-1900s. But it was not until recently that new technology has elevated these devices to new heights. They can now be portable, lightweight, easy to use, and affordable to pretty much anyone. They do come by different names, such as: automated external defibrillators, AED's, automatic external defibrillators, and portable defibrillators.

Statistics

Every day around 600 people in the US die of sudden cardiac arrest. One of the reasons that tally is so high is the suddenness and rapidity with which it claims its victims. This is because, when cardiac arrest occurs, the heart ceases to efficiently pump blood around the body, effectively shutting down the oxygen supply to the vital organs and the brain. Once this happens, the person has only a few minutes (between four and six on average) before brain and body death begin in a direction that soon becomes irreversible.

Treatment

The two (and probably only) effective medical remedies are:

1. CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) - in which the rescuer deeply depresses the chest area in rhythmic, successive motions, in an attempt to regain a pulse and begin the heart beating normally again.

2. Defibrillation - in which one or more electric shocks is delivered to the heart, stopping it momentarily, allowing it to recalibrate and gain the needed momentum to begin again a stable, rhythmic beat.

CPR, in this type of situation can help the victim. However it is no substitute for defibrillation.

The ideal scene would be to have both available, but given a choice in the matter, obviously an automated external defibrillator has to be it.

Training

As you can see from the above, training in the correct use of an automated defibrillator is not wholly necessary as they are able to give a rescuer on the spot directions . However, training is recommended. In the first place it is good to know the layout of the machine and its controls before having to use it. Secondly, it is a good idea to know the exact steps you're going to need to take in an emergency situation. For this reason manufacturers of AED's do offer training resources. Training is also available from: the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council, the American Health and Safety Institute, and more.

Conclusion

Sudden cardiac arrest is a serious health threat in this country as well as many other parts of the world. With heart disease the number one killer in the US, mortality rates from sudden cardiac arrest look to increase over the next decade or two (unless poor dietary habits and regular exercise routines become part of our everyday life).

Enter though the new breed of defibrillator. With these devices now available to the man or woman in the street, we have a chance to save many lives that might otherwise have been lost, and gain back some control in our continuing war against cardiac arrest.

If you or a loved one have known heart problems, an automated external defibrillator on hand may very well, one day, save your life.

10 Tips To Getting A More Effective Aerobic Workout

1. Always warm up with stretches so that your body is ready for an aerobic workout. This will help to avoid injury during the exercises and will also make it easier to move as the act of warming up increases flexibility.

2. If you are indoors, make sure that your aerobic workout room is comfortable when it comes to temperature. During most aerobic programs, you will work up a sweat and a warm room will make you sweat even more. On the other hand, a cold room is not ideal either. Instead, try getting your workout area to be somewhere in between.

3. If you are planning to use an aerobic workout video, watch it before beginning to exercise. This will give you an idea as to whether you will be able to successfully follow along with the program without injuring or straining your muscles.

4. Always choose an aerobic workout video according to your level of experience. There is nothing wrong with beginner videos. Never feel like you are in such a hurry that you bypass the first basic steps to fitness needed before moving up to the advanced aerobic workouts.

5. It is best to consult with a physician prior to beginning any aerobic workout regimen. If your physician recommends a specific plan, always be sure to follow it precisely.

6. If you feel that you have pulled a muscle or have suffered another type of aerobic related injury, stop your exercise program and rest. If the pain does not subside, consider applying a warm pack or towel to the injury. If you suspect that the injury is severe or may require medical attention, consult a physician immediately. Do not continue working out as this may only make the injury worse.

7. While doing your aerobic exercises, listen to your favorite tunes on the DVD player. If you are working out to an exercise video, simply turn the volume down if you already know the regimen. If you prefer to workout independently, music is a terrific way to keep you motivated and help you to maintain the pace.

8. If you are planning to enroll in an aerobic class, stop by and watch the class being taught before signing up. This will give you a good idea as to the length of time and level of physical activity that is required by a particular instructor.

9. When participating in any type of exercise program, which includes aerobic workouts, always wear comfortable clothes that are preferably made of cotton. This is the most breathable fabric and will provide the most comfort and ease of movement while working out.

10. At the conclusion of your aerobic workout, always perform several minutes of cool down exercises to get your body cooled down and slowly returned to a normal heart rate. This is better than rapidly stopping your aerobic workout.

The AED: Man's New Best Friend?

An AED (automated external defibrillator) is a computerized device used by emergency medical crews to attempt resuscitation of a victim of cardiac arrest.

Until a number of years ago these machines were only seen in formal medical settings, but in the last number of years as technological advancements have been made, and electronic miniaturization has impacted every facet of our daily lives, they are now able to be used by non-medical lay people. This is a great medical and electronic achievement, and a very positive step in the direction of saving lives in an area that to date left few victims alive to tell their harrowing stories.

AED's have become extremely accurate and simple to use. Although formal training is recommended, it is not necessarily essential, as is evidenced by the burgeoning placement of AED's in the home setting. Philips is the only company currently that has a defibrillator you can buy "over the counter", as it does not require a prescription.

There are quite a number of different AED’s on the market, most of which do require a prescription. They are manufactured and sold under guidelines set down by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The more complex and costly devices are used by medical emergency crews and in hospital or medical settings, however all AED's are designed to carry out basically the same function -- re-starting the heart.

It used to be that an AED operator needed to know how to recognize the signs of sudden cardiac arrest in order to determine if defibrillation was indeed necessary. Fortunately, this is no longer the case as the more modern AED, being computerized, is able to assess the need for defibrillation before the operator proceeds. Most modern AED's use text messages, voice prompts, lights, or all three, to "tell" the operator the correct steps to take and in which order to take them.

So who needs one? Well, first on the list would be known heart disease sufferers with a propensity toward cardiac arrest; second would be those people that simply have a known heart disease or defect; third, would be the rest of us.

Even children can suffer sudden cardiac arrest, and they can be treated using defibrillation in such an event. The American Heart Association does recommend that children under the age of eight be treated using attenuated pads, or paddles, which basically means that less voltage is delivered to the heart of the young child.

Because sudden cardiac arrest occurs without warning, and without much in the way of symptoms; because it can afflict “anyone”; and because the survival rate of SCA victims (around only 5%) is so abysmal, the placement of AED's in public places, such as libraries, gated communities, office buildings, shopping malls, etc, is a very positive development. There is a program:

PAD (public access to defibrillation), underway in some areas to increase AED placement many fold.

Due to the high mortality rate of sudden cardiac arrest, and because increasing numbers of people die from it every year (over 250,000 alone in the US last year), the new home-use AED's offer a brilliant ray of hope in what has been, until recently, a very dark war. With the new breed of AED's currently available, there is no reason why many more lives can't be saved each year.

From mortality rates of around 95% in victims of SCA who are not defibrillated within several minutes of suffering sudden cardiac arrest, these statistics take a nose-dive to around a 5% mortality rate for those who are able to be treated with an AED shortly after the event.

If you or someone you love suffers from any kind of heart ailment consider talking to your Dr. about the AED's available to you. If you do purchase one, it could well turn out to be the best money you ever spent.

You can help the push for Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) by writing to, or sending this article to, your local Congressmen or Congresswoman.
