Bad breath is something common to everyone at one point or another in their life, even those who brush and floss religiously. We all know that those who eat garlic will smell like it afterwards, but other times the realization that our breath is offensive comes on us unawares. So what causes it, and how can you avoid it?
The scientific name, "halitosis", meaning "a condition of the breath" was coined by the Listerine company, and refers to any unpleasant odors you might exhale from your mouth.
The odors are caused by anaerobic sulfur-producing bacteria in the mouth. Because anaerobic bacteria live without air (indeed, they're poisoned by oxygen), they generally live just under the surface of the tongue and throat. They help us to break down the proteins in certain foods and clear our mouths of diseased tissue, and there's no way to eliminate them from our mouths.
However, certain conditions put the bacteria into overdrive, and they end up releasing "volatile sulfur compounds" which have a very disagreeable odor. The only way to treat bad breath is to stop the bacteria from producing VSCs, or by chemically altering them into something that doesn't smell so bad.
Breath mints, breath sprays and chewing gum only mask the odor with something more pungent; unfortunately they also generally provide the bacteria with more sugars and proteins to fuel rapid growth and VSC production.
Dry mouth eliminates oxygen-carrying saliva, helping the bacteria to thrive. Post-nasal drip coats them with a protein-rich food source. Of course, high-protein foods, sugars and alcohols provide them with a growth medium, but high-acid foods like coffee also promote reproduction. Milk and dairy products will not be digested if you are lactose-intolerant, and so can also provide a long-lasting food source for the bacteria.
One of the few treatments that has been shown to work over the long term are those containing the active ingredient Oxyd-VIII, invented by Dr. Harold Katz and used in TheraBreath products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, sprays, gums and mints. This substance adds oxygen to the mouth environment, which converts the foul-smelling sulfide and mercaptan compounds into sulfate, which have no odor or taste.

Of course your mother has already told you this so why should I bring it up to you now at this late juncture? Well, consider if you will the cost to replace your teeth if you fail to floss, brush or are dead set on doing certain drugs like Crystal Meth, which causes rapid tooth decay and a diseased mouth?
What folks do not understand is that dental work can run in the tens of thousands if you do not take care of your teeth and judging by the obesity issues in American, well lets just say people are not eating right at all. Most deductibles for dental work can make it prohibitive from getting the proper dental work once a huge problem arises. This is due to Americans, being in credit card debt and such.
Preventative dental care, teeth cleaning and check-ups can serve you well in early detection and proper care. It simply does not pay to be hard-headed on this issue. Your teeth are just too important and medical professionals have linked tooth decay, gum problems and gum disease to heart disease. Play it smart and get your check-ups often. You will be glad you did. Consider all this in 2006.

Okay, it's true - having shining white teeth isn't going to change your life, but it's amazing how much of a boost it can give to your self-esteem. Keeping your teeth white for the whole of your lifetime can seem like an impossible challenge, but don't despair - modern dentistry has a solution! Teeth whitening can take time and be a little tedious to undergo, but it can certainly make a huge difference to the whiteness of your teeth.
For some people, having white teeth is an important part of their appearance. They consider it an extension of their personal wardrobe. When you think about it, there's probably some truth in that thought. When you first meet business associates, chances are you're going to look them in the eye and smile. During conversations, our eyes tend to flick between looking someone in the eye and looking at their mouth. So having presentable, even attractive teeth is a big bonus.
Basically, teeth whitening involves applying a gel-like solution to your teeth in order to improve their color. Some more in-depth procedures involve whitening the tooth from the inside. You keep repeating the process until you achieve the desired shade of white for your teeth. Many dentists will perform the teeth whitening procedure in their office, often as part of a normal appointment.
It's very likely that you'll have to undertake the procedure multiple times, and over time that can become costly. Most insurance companies class teeth whitening as a cosmetic procedure, and so are unlikely to cover the costs for you. Remember, too, that you may need to dedicate a large amount of time to the process. So you need some patience.
If you plan to go ahead with teeth whitening, be certain that white teeth is your goal. The teeth whitening procedure isn't going to fix anything else that's wrong with your teeth. If you suffer from any type of pain, teeth whitening certainly won't help, and in some cases may even aggravate existing issues. If that's likely to happen to you, make sure you consult your dental health professional prior to commencing any teeth whitening procedure.

You probably have noticed the recent influx of advertising directed towards the appearance of your smile. But what's really in a smile? Why are people literally putting their money where their mouth is?
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), having a healthy smile has been shown to improve a person's overall health and emotional well-being.
An improved smile can boost a person's self image, making them more confident in their daily lives. Higher self-esteem can motivate a person to pursue a new career, perhaps even a career they had previously ruled out because of a lack of self-esteem and confidence.
“Our smile is an extension of ourselves. When your smile is in alignment with who you are, then doors start to open.... people find new opportunities in life they never imagined were possible,” says Dr. Lori Kemmet of Incredible Smiles, a Boulder Cosmetic Dentistry Center.
Numbers tell the truth, and this holds true for the value Americans place on their smiles. A recent survey of U.S. adults by the AACD found the following:
* 92 percent of respondents believe attractive smiles are an important social asset.
* 87 percent said they always remember someone with an especially attractive smile.
In terms of personal and professional fulfillment:
* 85 percent of those surveyed said an unattractive smile makes a person less appealing to the opposite sex.
* 74 percent felt an unattractive smile can hurt a person's chances of career success.
Yet, despite the value Americans place on a smile, only 50 percent are satisfied with the appearance of their own smiles!
“A smile is not only a reflection of a person's oral health, but of their self-esteem and passions for life,” says Kemmet.
And the good news is that the benefits of cosmetic dental procedures are no longer just for those with deep pockets. Cosmetic dentistry is for anyone who desires to improve the quality of their smile, their oral health and their self-esteem. In fact, cosmetic dentistry is more affordable than it was a decade ago.
Why is it becoming so popular?
AACD Executive Director, Dr. Ken Zakariasen says, “In an age of increased oral consciousness, unlike a generation ago, people are keeping more of their natural teeth as they grow older. Maintaining an appealing smile is a major part of their desire to stay fit, healthy and attractive.” There is nothing that can enhance one's quest for a youthful appearance more than a beautiful smile.
