One of the best things you can do for your health is to know how to detect diabetes before it becomes an even bigger problem in your life by not taking care of it. Believe it or not there are quite a few people out there who don’t exactly know what diabetes is. Diabetes is a disorder characterized by hyperglycemia or elevated blood glucose (blood sugar). When the amount of sugar in our blood runs too low or too high it is quite typical for anyone to not feel very well. Diabetes is a term generally used when speaking of a person who has a blood sugar level that is consistently high. Millions of Americans have diabetes; however most of them do not realize it. In the long term diabetes can cause complications concerning the kidneys, eyes, heart, nerves and blood vessels.
There are two types of diabetes; Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes (insulin deficiency) means there is not enough insulin being produced. Type 2 diabetes (insulin resistance) occurs when there is plenty of insulin being produced but cells in our bodies are very resistant to it’s action, which in turn causes your blood sugar to consistently be high.
The most common symptoms of hyperglycemia, otherwise known as diabetes, would be frequently hungry, frequently thirsty and frequently urinating. Apart from those symptoms other symptoms that may occur are fatigue, weight loss, blurred vision, wounds healing more slowly, dry mouth, impotence, dry/itchy skin and recurrent infections.
Even though diabetes may sound like a horrible disease it can be easy to live with. The key to doing that is to take care of yourself. Many people do not take care of themselves because they refuse to admit there is something wrong with them health wise. They won’t even admit it to themselves. So, what happens when they do this? They try to survive without taking medication(s) they need or doing anything in their life to help keep their bodies healthy. Don’t do this. The only thing it can lead to is an unhealthy body, physically and mentally, and possibly depression in the long run.
If you wish to watch your blood sugar, whether you are diabetic or not, there are many things you can do at home. Purchase a blood glucose monitor. This can easily be purchased at your local pharmacy or online. There are websites that will tell you how high and or low your blood glucose level should be, though your blood glucose monitor should come with an instruction manual which supplies this information as well. One of the best things a diabetic can do is exercise and eat properly. Not only does exercise help to keep your body in good condition on the outside but it helps on the inside as well. However, if you are a diabetic do not do anything involving weight training. Studies suggest that this can affect your blood glucose level by increasing it.

1. Diabetic retinopathy. This is a microvascular disease that affects the tiny blood vessels in the back of your eyes. 3. Diabetic Neuropathy. This is a nerve disorder in which the nerves become damaged. It can affect many body systems, including your feet, legs, hands, urinary tract, digestive tract and sexual organs. This is one of the most common complications of any type of diabetes. Neuropathy is the reason for 87% of the amputations in the United States every year. You should have regular check-ups with your medical doctor. He or she should be testing for reflexes, eyeball motion, sensation in your feet legs etc.
4. Heart Disease. This refers to the diseases of the heart. Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle is too weak to pump blood throughout your body at the rate it should. It does not mean that your heart completely stops. Coronary heart disease is the most common form of heart disease. It occurs when the coronary arteries become narrowed or clogged by cholesterol and other fat deposits and can't supply enough blood to the heart. In a survey by the American Diabetes Association, it was discovered that 68% of those with diabetes had no idea that they had an increase risk for heart disease.
5. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). This is the disease of the arteries within your entire body. For example, a stroke or problems with the arteries in your leg would be a cardiovascular disease. The risk factors for CVD is obesity, hypertension, high triglyceride levels, low HDL cholesterol levls and lack of physical exercise.
Diet, exercise and maintaining normal blood sugar levels are key to preventing or prolonging the onset of these complications.

If you are a diabetic like I am then you may know about the Dawn Phenomenon. Until I understood what this was all about, I would be completely frustrated every morning when I got up out of bed and tested my blood sugar level. It would always be much higher than it was when I went to bed. I couldn't figure out why. How could I go to bed with a level of 105mg/dL and get up in the morning with a level of 135mg/dL? It made no sense. I wasn't sleep walking and raiding the fridge during the night. Well, welcome to what is called, the Dawn Phenomenon.
No matter whether you suffer with diabetes or not, everyone experiences the Dawn Phenomenon. What happens is that while we are comfortably asleep, during the hours of 3:00 - 8:00 AM, our bodies release certain hormones that help repair and maintain our bodies. This is completely normal. In response to these hormones being released, our bodies will also release stored glucose.
The hormones that are released include Growth Hormone from the pituitary gland, Cortisol, Glucagon and Epinephrine, or adrenalin as it is commonly known as. These hormones cause an increase in insulin resistance, which in turn causes your glucose level to rise.
Since these hormones are repairing and doing maintenance work during the late night/early morning hours, this causes your glucose level to rise during the morning hours. So, you test your blood sugar level first thing and notice a much higher reading. This is why they call this the Dawn Phenomenon.
What can you do to prevent the Dawn Phenomenon? There are a couple of things you can do to help keep high blood glucose levels down in the morning. If you are eating too many carbs later in the evening, try to cut back. Eat a snack like peanut butter, or a piece of deli meat and cheese. Another thing you can do is exercise in the evening. 30-45 minutes of brisk walking or cycling will go a long way in keeping your blood sugar levels lower throughout the night.
You might also want to try and eat no food after you're evening dinner. Many times this will work due to your bedtime reading being greatly reduced and offsetting the Dawn Phenomenon rise during the night. If this doesn't work for you, talk to your doctor and see if they will make some changes in your medication.
Finally, be sure to eat breakfast. This is so important. The increase in blood glucose after eating will often 'shut off' the continued rise because your body begins to sense an increase in fuel coming in so to speak. By not eating breakfast your blood sugar can continue to rise up until 11:00 or 12:00.
It is important for people who suffer from diabetes to constantly track their blood glucose levels. You may want to even get up and take a reading during the late night hours around 4:00 AM. Track your levels and make the proper adjustments. Now that you know what is going on, and why your levels can be so crazy, you can better deal with the Dawn Phenomenon.
