Four Reasons Why You Should Learn To Meditate

I know, I can hear you saying it now, "Why would Meditation Help Me? Isn't Meditation for the Great Eastern Gurus?" The categorical answer is NO! Every single person on this planet should learn to meditate to help you in your day-to-day growth, to help you cope with the world and to help you deal with your anxiety.

Meditation is merely hypnosis without suggestion..

Let me explain …

The whole role of meditation is to help find your inner peace that is the art of putting all that chaos in your mind and you life into some sort of order. The first step of meditation is bringing you to a point of calm, a point of peace upon which you can build and manage control. Once you have achieved that you can further explore your own mind. Our mind today often swirls with information, facts, stress, worries and much more simply because of the way in which we live and the bombardment of information from commercial entities. The role of meditation is to help you find a way of managing that information and to reflect on your surroundings.

Meditation will help you to find that point at which you can cope and manage all the bombardments without feeling over whelmed but that is not the only reason we meditate. Let me outline four reasons why you should consider learning the art of meditation.

Reason 1 - Meditation Will Assist You In Calming

One of the core reasons why an individual might learn meditation is to help with their ability to cope with stress and to become calm. One of the roles of meditation is to help release the alpha waves in both our left and right side of our brains. These alpha waves will help bring about a sense of calm, similar to when you would whistle a happy tune or simply day dream.

Learning to meditate and bring you to a state of calm will help you cope with the daily stress of life. From personal experience I have found that if I do not meditate for 20 minutes a day minimum, I find that my ability to cope with the daily stress of work is far harder then when I have completed my meditation.

Reason 2 - Meditation Can Help You Lower Your Blood Pressure

I personally have experienced the effect meditation can have on your blood pressure. Many a time I have gone without meditating for a number of days and my blood pressure has slowly crept up. I have done many experiments with my blood pressure and meditation and this is one I encourage you to try. I simply bought an electronic blood pressure machine which you can buy from a pharmacist or chemist for about $200 Australian. I first checked my blood pressure to find out what it currently is. I then dd 20 minutes of meditation and checked it again. I found that both my blood pressure and my heart rate had dropped by up to 30%. I have also tried doing the same exercise but instead of meditating, I just sit for 20 minutes and relaxing but I have found I do not get anywhere near the same improvement. Generally I would only see about 5 to 10% improvements.

I have seen many research documentaries that have illustrated in a practical way how simply using basic meditation techniques can decrease your blood pressure and your heart rate. Visit your local library and check out the books and research they have on meditation. You will be surprised how many doctors now encourage their patients to learn meditation. My GP (General Practitioner) and his wife actually run guided courses on meditation.

Reason 3 - Meditation Can Help With Creativity

There is a lot of who do about meditation and a lot of people call themselves meditation experts. Honestly, I do not buy into that for one simple reason. Meditation is about you. When you are meditating there will be no one else in your head except for you, so in the end you are the expert of your own meditation techniques. However, I will say that there are many people who can help you in learning meditation but ultimately, if you are listening to them while you are meditating you are not focusing on your inner self but on your outer self.

I have been told that I am one of the most prolific writers out there. It is normal for me to sit down in the morning and by the afternoon I will have belted out 5 to 10 articles of 1,000 to 2,000 words and my editors would not print my material if it was not of excellent quality. One of the reasons I believe I am able to achieve this, is because of my meditation regime. When I have completed my meditation, my mind is free of stress which really opens my creativity. I just like many writers suffer, what we like to call, "Writers block". Often this is caused simply because of the chaos of the information in our head.

If I have a situation where writers block is really setting in, I simply stop, head to my meditation area for 20 minutes and once I am finished, I will always have a swirl of great ideas to complete my material. One thing to note though, I have found that Baroque Music at 60 beats a minute, works best for getting that creativity flowing. I prefer this style of meditation music, over tranquil water flowing or the sounds of the open bush simply because the 60 beats a minute, helps release far more alpha waves in my brain.

To give you an idea of how powerful Baroque Meditation music at 60 beat a minute can be, the Coca Cola Retail Research Council found that relaxed customers would in fact purchase 38% more than those who were not relaxed.

Reason 4 - Meditation Can Help With Learning

In particular Baroque Meditation music makes the perfect background for all training and learning environments from pre-school to government "think tanks." In fact it is used in schools all over Australia. A quote from the teacher of a remedial class here in Australia: "It seems to slow them down so they can think." Corporate trainers can improve the effectiveness of training sessions dramatically. A colleague uses the baroque meditation music as background for his memory. In fact I have been using Baroque Meditation Music in some of our computer sessions and I have seen dramatic improvements in the way people cope with our technical training. Look, the days of meditation being only for the hippies or eastern religions like Buddhism are over. Anyone who has ever tried meditation will tell you that you certainly will feel a sense of calm and as you become more proficient you will find your ability to copy, be creative and learn more will be improved. The challenge that most people fear with meditation is that they will look foolish or their peers might think less of you but in all honesty, you maybe surprised to find out that the people you think will look on you as foolish are in fact the ones using meditation daily.

All I want to do is to encourage you to give meditation a try. What have you got to loose but just 20 minutes of your time and imagine what you might gain? To finish off I want to take a moment to simply reiterate the four reasons why you should consider learning to meditate:

Reason 1 - Meditation Will Assist You In Calming
Reason 2 - Meditation Can Help You Lower Your Blood Pressure
Reason 3 - Meditation Can Help With Creativity
Reason 4 - Meditation Can Help With Learning

Meditation and Hypnosis

"Meditation is merely hypnosis without suggestion.." -is what most hypno-therapists will tell you.

And whilst this in some (very few) instances may well be true, it is unfortunate that this view is promulgated, as this only describes a very limited aspect of meditation, and does not consider the phenomenal number of forms of meditation that are in fact out there. It also does not consider the true nature of most forms of meditation.

If meditation can help with creativity then it also stands to reason that mediation music can help with learning.

To illustrate this I would suggest that one consider the incredible number of guided meditations that are offered, sold, and promoted by various profit and not-for-profit organizations. Of course to fully understand the impact of this one has to consider the makeup of most of these guided meditations, which include a few primary elements :

1. Usually designed to create an alternate state of consciousness.
2. Usually designed with a specific life / meditative objective in mind.
3. These objectives are even sometimes pursued in some form of metaphor, visualized or otherwise.
4. Can be administered by oneself, or by another, or in a group context, with great success.

When this is reviewed, it is clear that there is almost always an objective which is pursued in guided meditations. One then also has to acknowledge that no objectives can be reached without some form of suggestion to prod the practitioner in the right direction. Of course there are various other forms of meditation in which suggestion, in itself, plays a lesser role. It should be remembered though, that meditation without objective is usually fairly pointless, and as such most forms of meditation is practiced with some objective in mind. And not surprising is also then the fairly obvious deduction that there has to be some suggestion, even in these.

A further example of this would be a simple application of meditation for the purpose of relaxation. (a fairly common practice). In this instance there remains an objective. "Relaxation". And whilst suggestion is not usually passed during the meditation, they are usually pre meditative suggestions, which are then acted out during the meditation, and usually with desired results.

So to reduce in definition meditation to a pointless exercise, would be less than fair. This of course brings to mind another point of consideration.

Is there really a difference between hypnosis and meditation?… After all they do seem to have similar primary properties. And if so, wherein lies the distinction, if there is one ?…

Whilst the answers to these questions remain somewhat more complex, it should be considered that whilst this may not be recognized at this stage, meditation is clearly a less formalized form of hypnosis, and in fact qualifies as hypnosis in most analogies. Especially when the properties of an average meditation is considered.

In fact when this analogy is considered further, it comes to mind that meditation sets out to do in principle the same as hypnosis. It also focuses on creating mental states within which it is possible to manipulate the mind towards achieving objectives that have been set. One thing to remember though is that this is usually practiced in a far less formal environment, and more so in a solo situation, essentially resembling self hypnosis. Of course there are group environments wherein meditation is practiced, and usually in guided form. These however still maintain similar properties and as such can be as effective as most forms of hypnosis practiced.

With this in mind it would appear that there is virtually no distinction to be made in definition, except for their uses as therapeutic tools.

1. It is possible to therapeutically utilize hypnosis to manipulate and monitor responses from patients. This making it possible to apply direct, and instantly adaptable mental therapy in a controlled environment. This offers therapists an opportunity to treat more severe mental ailments for which meditation would not be suitable. Essentially this is achieved by the creation of externalized control through hypnosis, which is conducive to safe mental healing, of fairly severely ill patients. This also offers a fairly simple alternative to meditation for those who do not possess the inner ability and strength, to self hypnotize / meditate.

2. Whilst meditation can also be used as a therapeutic tool, it requires more practitioner internalized ability. Considering the nature of meditation, and the significant similarities that exist between meditation and hypnosis, meditation can be used as efficiently as most self hypnosis techniques, and even some therapeutic uses like regression and other forms of related hypnotherapies, are available to advanced meditators. It is possible for a practitioner to achieve similar result with meditation as with hypnotherapy, on things like say "helping you quit smoking". However when it comes to more severe mental ailments / conditions hypnotheraphy is without a doubt better for dealing with the issues that may come forth, due to the externalized ability of the therapist to monitor and improvise a session as needed.

Accepting this I would suggest that meditators should not be afraid to explore their own minds and abilities using meditation as a platform, and expanding it to include what would traditionally be considered selfhypnosis techniques. Noting that if this is done with care, one can achieve a lot more from your meditation, in a lot less time. Especially when combining techniques from both genres when focus is placed on inner self ability, rather than the traditional hypnosis requirement for externalized control. Applying this, one is also offered a unique opportunity to set your own hypnosis / meditative goals, which is not normally possible with hypnotherapists, as they usually want to decide what is best for you.

Of course there will always remain room for externalized hypnosis / meditation, and if the therapist can be trusted, this can also come with amazing benefit, and probably somewhat quicker results, than expected from attempts to do it on your own.

Meditation as a Lifestyle

Meditation begins as postures and breath control and mantras. But it expands, just as the mind expands when we empty it of clutter and stretch it with hope and awareness. The more aware we become, the larger the capacity of the mind becomes, and the more we are able to meditate. The more we meditate, the larger our consciousness expands, so that the dynamic process is never-ending and ever-increasing.

Meditation can begin to follow us to work, in the form of a mood we carry away from our meditations. Or it can follow us when we play, allowing laughter to increase because we have less stress, thanks to meditation. Meditation is a state of mind, and a process of focus. So we can learn to expand meditation into everything we do, because we are always in some state of mind or another, and we are always focusing upon something. Meditation just gives us the chance to turn that automatic, constant focus into a tool for shaping our state of mind, our mood, and our outlook.

A good way to begin to grow meditation beyond the sitting session is to write. Just as we grow a seed in a small container and then move it outside when it is stronger, we can treat our meditation in the same way and move it from our still meditation room, where our eyes are closed and the mind is empty, to our writing desk, where the eyes are open and the mind is racing a mile a minute, looking for words to express ourselves.

Write about how it feels to meditate, and then write about any times outside of your meditation session where you might have tasted that feeling again, even for a moment. Keep a journal, and write down each time something happens to remind you of the peaceful and blissful moments during your meditation sessions. The more you observe these instances, the more you will connect your meditation to your routine life, and this is a gentle way to begin a lifestyle of meditation.

When you garden, cook, or eat, meditate on the whole process. Someone planted the seed and waited for the sunshine and rain. Someone harvested the plant or fruit and someone cooked it while thinking about how it might taste. There is a continuity of life, and it begins inside the earth, and then we incorporate ourselves into that chain of life by eating and converting food into energy. We use that energy in the world, and if we use it well, we help to honor the earth from where it was first born.

Everything is a cycle of energy, and meditation is a living part of the cycle. Take the energy you gather during meditation, and put it into the other aspects of your life. If you begin to feel exhausted or stressed, it is a hunger telling you that it is time to nourish your inner core by going back to sit down and meditate again. Then you will feel satisfied, and can go back to your meditation lifestyle, with renewed energy to share with the world.

Meditation: A First Step To Embracing A Healthy Lifestyle

Do you avoid mirrors and pictures of yourself because you don't like what you see? Do you just put your nose to the grind and follow your routine, day after day, without thinking about anything besides what you're doing at the moment, and maybe what else you need to accomplish today?

Don't worry, you are not alone. I would guess that most people are like that. But how do you think they are doing? How are you doing? The best measure of your success is your own feelings. The best way to assess the health of your lifestyle is to take a step back.

My favorite tool for taking that first step back is meditation. The goal of meditation is to silence the tapes in your head, but you don't just tell them over and over to shut up, you find something totally different to focus on. Try it for just 10 minutes right now. Light a candle in the quietest part of your home and find a comfortable sitting position where you can watch the candle flame. This can be cross-legged on the floor, on a pillow, or in a comfortable chair. Anywhere you can sit comfortably with correct posture for 10 minutes.

Now just look at the candle and let your mind relax. If too many thoughts crowd into your mind one after another, concentrate on your breathing. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Allow your chest to fill with air, expanding fully, then release.

Another thing you can focus on is the muscles in your body. Contract and then release your toes, your feet, your ankles, your calves, one part at a time. Just choose a focus that works for you, and do it for 10 minutes. Whenever a thought enters your head, name it -- "I'm thinking about doing the laundry later" -- then let it go. Refocus.

If the time goes quickly and you want to continue, do it for 10 minutes more, or longer. Otherwise, stop at 10. Before you jump up and get on with your day, take a moment to recognize how you feel. Name how you feel. Do you feel relaxed, renewed, more able to focus than before you meditated, happy, peaceful, content... give it a name, and then state it as an affirmation. Stand in front of a mirror, look yourself in the eye, and say "I AM content with myself and at peace with my life," or, "I AM relaxed and ready to take on any challenge."

Now take a moment to take a few steps back from yourself, as if you were looking at a picture of your life from a distance. See exactly where you are, your surroundings, your activities, your duties, your thoughts. Now squint your eyes (in your imagination) and look at your life as if it was an impressionistic painting. What colors do you see? How do you feel about your life? Are you living a healthy lifestyle?

Where do you want to go to change this picture of your life?

Every time you meditate and do the following steps, imagine that your mirror image and the picture of your life are becoming ever closer to what you wish they could be.

And when you finally step back into your daily life, when you're scheduling your day, make sure that everything you do is working with you, not against you, as you become this evolved person in this new healthy lifestyle.

It's all about attitude. You choose whether you wash your dishes resenting the chore or appreciating the opportunity to create a clean, healthy, pleasant kitchen.

Know that you can make the changes necessary to creating a healthier lifestyle. Start living your life as if it truly were your own!

Fasting for Your Mind

Fasting for our minds

Everyone has heard of fasting.
The practice of taking a hiatus from food.
Doing so has lots of beneficial effects on our bodies.

Mostly ridding our body of toxins.

What about ridding our minds of toxins?

Sound like a good idea?

Here, do this:

Don't think a negative thought for seven straight days.

Can't do it?
Of course you can't...
What this means is if a negative thought comes into your mind, let it go.

Don't let a single negative thought stay in your mind for
more than a moment or two.

Often when I hear people speak about meditating, they complain
that they can not concentrate.

OK fair enough, do the following, this is like a visualization:

Picture a train, lets say it has almost a hundred cars...

You are on one side of the train tracks.

What you're focusing on, what you're meditating on is on the
other side of the tracks...

A distracting thought pops into your mind, instead of bitching and moaning that you've lost your place...

See the distraction as a passing railroad car.

Remember when you get stuck at a RR crossing,
waiting for the long train to finish up?

You can still see the street, the cars on the other side of the train.

Get the picture?

So do it, do it right now!

Seven days with no negative thoughts

OK,OK here is an additional tactic:

Picture your postal mail box.
Negative thought comes in.

don't open it!

If you want, you can even write on it: "return to sender"

Put that damn thing back in the mail box and flip up the flag so the mail man/ mail person can send it back where it came from...

It doesn't live here:)

I'm going to go into more detail on my other blog:
