My Meditation Practice at Healthy Treadmills Losing Weight

We are happy to present articles about My Meditation Practice!

Four Meditation Exercises for the Beginner

How do YOU meditate? What works for you? What do you feel in your body? I know I'm not the only one to admit that I have a difficult time meditating. Here are some answers I received from the above question on an interactive Conscious Evolution site last year. I hope one of these methods will help you on your meditative journeys.

"I am one with the universe and all things in IT. Not my will, but thine be done."

Method #1:

Ritual is very important to my meditation practice. In my practice that includes meditating at the same time every day: incense, a lit candle, acknowledging the four directions and an opening prayer and music. I have been influenced by Zen meditation, yoga relaxation and breathing practices, visualization techniques, mantra repetition and even dancing techniques to name a few. My meditation experience changes from day to day as sometimes it is very contemplative of my life; some days I feel connected to nature or I find myself praying for peace, compassion and love. At times my meditation takes me into a void where there is no thought or it can be very visionary where I receive insights about my life and that of others around me; sometimes I even see things far into our future. Every once in a while, I am BLESSED with feeling an all-loving presence that permeates my whole being with happiness and love. What is constant and most important about my meditation practice is that it has become as essential to my life as breathing air is for all of us. Best of all, I have seen how my behavior in my everyday life has become (for the most part-who is perfect?) a mirror of the peace and compassionate feeling I tap into when I meditate. I have been meditating for 20 years. May you have a blessed journey. From Pablo (Evolve Community Café)

Method #2

Good question. I use a very unstructured approach, working toward the goal of making all my waking and sleeping moments meditative. If I am walking (or cycling), I develop a rhythmic cadence of affirmation around some issue (health, harmony, love, etc) and pace the affirmation to my pace. For instance, I like an eight-step pace and this harmony affirmation works well for me, "I am one with the universe and all things in IT. Not my will, but thine be done."

My hypnosis/hypnotherapy training has taught me that trance induction is easy. I use the following sequence of statements repeated sub-vocally (and paced with normal breathing cycle) to induce both trance and meditation: "Relax now. Release now. Renew now. Refresh now. Live now. Love now. Heal now. Grow now. Peace now".

I try to be in nature everyday, whether it is watching ants in my backyard or fishing on the local rivers and lakes. That is meditation to me. I also use spontaneous free-associative journaling as part of meditative practice. I picked this up from Julia Cameron's "The Artist's Way." She calls such discipline "morning pages" and there is no doubt that this approach has great power to center one in meditative action and intuition.

I guess what I am seeing from what I am saying is that I am highly kinesthetic and prefer action meditation to passive meditation...and if you hadn't asked the question, I would not have realized this. Bravo. Hope that makes some sense. Nick (Evolve Community Café)

Method #3

I meditate early in the morning -- it's a big part of my life. About four years ago I went on a weekend retreat in Oxford to the Brahma Kumaris and learned to meditate by Raj Yoga which means meditating with your eyes open. At first it was difficult but Discipline is the key. It calms my working mind and psychologically-wise, I am more at peace. Molly

Method #4

I read this in The Evolution Angel by Dr. Michael Abrams and liked it, so will share it with you.

The angels believe that we lost the ability to communicate with God directly when the churches put in a go-between for communication. These angels give us permission to use God's name, which is Yahweh, in meditating with God to connect at a deeper level and on an evolutionary plane. Yahweh is the name referred to in the Lord's Prayer. It is the name in the Judeo-Christian tradition that is said to be so sacred that it is never to be uttered aloud.

If you dwell on this name in your mind over and over, day after day, month after month, all good things will come to you. Do not use the name in an empty, mechanical manner. Repeat the name silently within. Saying the name over and over helps you to overcome that inner chatter.

Here's how it's done:

1) As you say the name your thoughts should gradually slow and lengthen. Repeat each syllable rather slowly. Saying each syllable in about a second and then lengthening it to 3-4 seconds with a little rest between syllables. It will feel good when you hit the correct cadence for you.

2) To further enhance the technique, breath in on the "Yah' and exhale on the "Vay." Your breath should be smooth, peaceful and in a leisurely fashion.

3) When you get that part down, add in the heartbeat. Visualize and feel the sounds, along with your breath, flowing in and out of your heart.

The Angel's say that this mediation will fix everything in your life and put it back into balance. You start developing in ways you never thought possible and at an astonishingly rate--with less pain.

Yes. This sounds like the meditation for me.

This prosperity sunrise is a shamanic healing meditation designed to bring you closer to the aspects of wealth and power inherent in the symbolism of the sun; it is easy to do and quite wonderful.

Your Prosperity Sunrise - A Wealth Meditation For Women

In the olden days, the sun and gold and god and prosperity were all tied up together. They were also mostly considered to be the domain of men and many amongst us who are not of that gender still carry a residual notion that this might not be for "our kind", simply by the virtue of overwhelming experience of so many generations for a hundred thousand years.

Fact is though that the sun is a powerful prosperity and wealth symbol, perhaps the most powerful of them all - and it shines on EVERYONE.

If you are of a mind, you could put on some suitable music and move or dance this meditation - this will give you 360' of physical movement which strengthens the experience and makes it far more profound than if it is entirely autogenic.

So in a moment,

close your eyes

and find yourself

on a wide, sweeping plane,

cool and dark it is still

but there is a banding

on the far horizon

that tells you

the sun

is about to rise.

This is YOUR personal prosperity sunrise.

Feel the power

and radiance of the sun

increasing

as the sky fills

with living light,

as it gets brighter and brighter,

all around, you feel the light

and then the sun rises

majestically over the horizon

and floods the plane with light,

bathes you in light,

powerful energy,

powerful charge

and powerful wealth.

Accept this blessing

with open arms.

Open your heart,

your mind

and all your being

to the golden rays of sun.

Turn around slowly

on the spot and bathe

in this blessing of wealth

and brilliant power.

When you are filled

to overflowing and beyond,

return and ...

Continue with your day!

My Favorite Meditation

Here’s a simple but powerful meditation exercise you may enjoy. Teaching you the basics of meditation is beyond the scope of this blog entry (maybe someone can post a comment with a link to a meditation primer for those who’ve never done it), but if you’re already familiar with it, I think you’ll find this one interesting and valuable.

I didn’t learn this particular meditation from anyone else — it’s just something I made up at one point and have been doing for around 10 years now.

First I get myself totally relaxed and into a peaceful state. Then I imagine a special room in my mind which has two chairs facing each other. I sit in one chair, and in the chair opposite me, I visualize my future self five years from now. He appears as the ideal “me” I’m striving to become. He’s physically fit, strong, brave, confident, driven, passionate, enthusiastic, etc. We have a conversation for 5-10 minutes where I ask him questions, and he willingly answers them. He usually looks at me almost with a sense of nostalgia and compassion, since he knows where I am right now as well as the challenges I’m dealing with, challenges he’s long since overcome.

Eventually my future self leaves. Then I get up and take his seat, and my past self from five years ago enters the room and takes the first seat. So now I’m the future self (Steve 2005) looking back on my past self (Steve 2000). I take a moment to remember what my life was like exactly five years ago, so I can recall what that past Steve is experiencing. Now he’s asking me questions about his future (my present), and I’m providing the answers. I’m often amazed to look back and see just how trivially easy his challenges seem to me today, even though I remember that they appeared much grander when I was in his shoes. I take the time to reassure Steve 2000 that everything turns out well for Steve 2005. I also let him know what things I haven’t yet solved that I’m still working on.

Then I do one more step and fast-forward time by five years. So now I’m Steve 2010, and I’m facing Steve 2005. I’m looking back on my present situation from the future — from a vantage point where I’ve already solved my biggest challenges. Now I see my Steve 2005 asking the same questions I was previously asking Steve 2010, and I’m able to answer them with confidence and certainty.

Then I imagine all three of us in the room together (Steve 2000, Steve 2005, Steve 2010), and I visualize all three of our bodies becoming translucent. We walk into each other and blend into one being in a flash of light. When this happens I’m often overwhelmed by a release of emotion — the feeling is somewhat different each time I experience it. We become an integrated whole, a single being who exists outside of time but has been splintered in order to experience the sensation of growth and change.

As I slowly bring myself out of this meditation, I feel very peaceful and calm. But the most important benefit is a feeling of oneness, a sense that I’m more than just a physical being moving forward through time. I feel like an integrated being who exists at all times but is merely focusing his consciousness on a particular time in order to experience it more fully. When I’m in this state of mind, I see the present moment as something contained within my being instead of the more common perception of being a person contained within the reality of the present moment. This has the effect of melting present-moment concerns and replacing them with a feeling of expansiveness and transcendence. My new perception causes my present-reality problems to shrink, which makes them far easier to resolve, sometimes almost trivially easy.

I encourage you to try this meditation at least once to see if you find it as beneficial as I do.

Steve is intensely growth-oriented. He trained in martial arts, ran the L.A. Marathon, and graduated from college in three semesters with two degrees. He can juggle, count cards at blackjack, and make damn good guacamole. Steve is also a polyphasic sleeper, sleeping just 2-3 hours per day and only 20 minutes at a time. So chances are good that he's awake right now.

Looking around the Body in a Meditative State

An alternative way to look at your body from within and bring about healing and rebalancing.

From this infinite, stable state of self-awareness we can take the conscious mind to look at all the organs of the body. In this quiet state we can feel any un-ease or slight sensation of pain. This discomfort may have been caused by stress or a negative emotion and these feelings of discomfort can turn into the seeds of disease.

If we have a disease or problem area in our body, in this state of quiet meditation, we can take the conscious mind to that area, investigate the problem and decide the best course of action to correct this imbalance or physical damage.

A good way to look at the body is a bit like looking at the country. Just as the country is made up of lots of individual people, all pulling together to benefit the whole country, we can look at the body as being made up of lots of individual cells.

Just imagine yourself in an aeroplane at night looking down at a large town. We see all the car lights driving down the road.

This reminds me so much of the blood of the country flowing around the country, carrying all the knowledge and materials needed to maintain the country in good health.

In the same way, as we meditate we take the conscious mind to finer and finer levels of the thought process. This feeling of expansion also has a physical side; we see finer and finer levels of the physical body.

For example, we are deep in meditation and we feel a slight pain in the heart. Our attention is naturally drawn to that area of pain. In our awareness we get a vision of our heart. At first this is a general outline and we notice it pulsating as it performs its natural function.

As we carry on meditating and go a little deeper into that quiet state of meditation, we notice the heart is coming closer and getting bigger. We find that we can go inside the heart and check out all the arteries. As we go even deeper, we start to see all the cells that make up the heart and, if we want, we can talk to these cells and ask if they have any problems.

In this way we can see and find out what imbalances exist and what is causing the problem.

Another example may be that we live in a town where the Queen is coming to visit and the whole town gets excited. The Queen arrives and her kind words uplift all the people and for weeks and months afterwards there is a feeling of warmth and love in the town.

In the same way we can take our conscious mind, like the Queen’s visit, to an organ like the heart, and in that quiet state of meditation visit that organ, and thank all the cells for their untiring work in keeping the body in perfect health. We can praise them and appreciate their work. We can listen to their concerns and suggest remedies.

One concern they may have is that there is a deposit building up on the inside of the arteries. This may be caused by too high a level of blood cholesterol.

In this quiet state of meditation were the mind is expanded and you feel at one with yourself and the universe, you could introduce a small impulse of thought or a very fine feeling that says: I want to be more aware of what I eat, or I want my digestive system to stop absorbing cholesterol; or you could ask the cells who are responsible for cleaning the arteries to recruit more cells and design a more efficient cleaning method. The possibilities are limited only by our knowledge and perception.

Just as in the physical world in which we live technology is forever advancing, new materials are being designed, better designs and layouts of roads, buildings etc.; in the same way, in this quiet state of meditation, we can suggest to our cells’ DNA that we want the body to work in a more efficient way.

You could suggest that you want some cells to look at what is happening in other parts of the body. Is there a material in another part of the body, which could be utilised to solve a problem here? If so we can increase the knowledge of the cells to use this new design and bring about an improvement. This has been going on for aeons in the subconscious of man and forms the basis of human evolution.

But with modern techniques of meditation it is now possible to speed up this process just by becoming aware of it.

Preksha Meditation-Perception of Body

Introduction to be given prior to the exercise:

The practice of the perception of body consists in concentrating the mind on each part of the body, one by one and perceiving the sensations and vibrations taking place in each part. Of course, here the perception does not mean the visual perception, but the mental one. The sensations may be superficial sensations of the skin such as the contact with your clothes warmth or coolness, itching and perspiration etc, or they may be the sensations of pain, numbness, tingling etc. felt in the muscles or the vibrations of the electrical impulses in the nervous system or any other type of vibrations. Starting from the surface you have to penetrate deeply inside and try to become aware of the internal and subtle vibrations. Remain completely equanimous towards the sensations; try to keep your mind free from like or dislike.

The third step of preksha meditation is perception of body. Concentrate your mind on the big toe of your right foot. Allow it to spread and permeate throughout the whole portion of the toe. Perceive the sensations and vibrations taking place in that region. Become aware of them, experience them without any like or dislike; use deep concentration and remain fully alert.

Now shift your attention to each part of right limb one by one. I shall now indicate the name of the part of your body on which you have to concentrate your mind and perceive it: The other toes, the sole, the heel, the ankle, the upper part of the foot, the calf-muscles, the knee, the thigh, upto the hip-joint. Perceive the whole part, experience the sensations and vibrations taking place in each part. Maintain equanimity.

In the same way practice perception of all the parts of your left limb.

Thus the trip of the lower body is completed. Now, start the trip of the middle body from the waist upto the neck. Concentrating your mind on each part one by one--perceive the waist, the navel, the abdomen including the big intestine, the small intestine, the kidney, the spleen, the liver, the pancreas, the duodenum, the stomach and the diaphragm. Then the whole portion of the chest including the lungs, the heart, the ribs, the throat and the vocal cords. Concentrate your mind and perceive.

Then practice the perception of the whole portion of the back including the spine, the spinal cord and the neck. Now concentrate on the whole portion of the right hand and arm including the thumb, the finger, the palm, the wrist, the lower arm, the elbow, the upper arm and the shoulder. Perceive each part one by one. In the same way concentrate on the left hand and arm. The trip of the middle body is completed.

Now we come to the upper body. Concentrate your mind on each part from the chin upto the head. The chin, the lips, the inner portion of the mouth including the tongue, the teeth, the palate, the cheeks, the nose, the right ear, all the three parts---the outer, the middle and the inner, the right temple, in the same way the left ear and the left temple, the right eye, the left eye, the forehead and the head. Perceive each part one by one. During the perception of the tongue allow your tongue to remain hanging freely, without touching anywhere inside the mouth.

While perceiving the head, perceive all parts of your brain--the front, the back, the right, the left, the outer and the inner.

Allow your mind to permeate throughout the brain. The trip of the upper body is completed.

Now practice the perception of body as a whole. You may stand up slowly and carefully, keeping your eyes closed. Allow your mind to travel from the big toes to the head and from the head to the big toes, rather speedily. Passing through each part of the body, perceive the vibrations throughout the body. Experience a tingling sensation in each and every muscle, skin, nerve and cell produced by the contact of your conscious mind. You may also practice the holding of breath for a while intermittently. Get yourself completely absorbed in the perception of body.

Now allow your mind to travel throughout the body rather slowly. If you experience pain or any other peculiar sensation, you may stop there for a while and perceive it with equanimity without any like or dislike.
