Cucumbers vs. chips
If you snack at night like I do - try to make a conscious effort to at least substitute something healthy for the chips. I often opt for a few slices of cucumber. Filling and not fattening!

This is one question that I have been asked on many occasions. The answer I would say is simple yet complicated. The simple explanation is that meditation provides us with peace of mind, and helps us do away with stress.
The Inner Explanation
Our body not only constitutes of the physical parts clearly visible to the eyes, but also the invisible portion known as the energy body. Meditation has a direct affect on the energy body, which then manifests in the physical body. The energy body is better known as the aura that surrounds our physical body like an envelope and penetrates it as well. The aura has scientifically been termed as an electromagnetic field around our body.
It has been noted that when we meditate, the aura or energy body expands in size. (We can measure the size of our aura!) In other words, our energy body is strengthened as more energies flow in. The inner feeling of peace and freedom from stress is due to the strengthening of the aura. It has been seen that the feeling of irritability, anger, frustration, and listlessness, normally associated with stress, is due to a weak aura. Stressful people have weak auras. The lack of energies gives rise to these symptoms. As meditation builds your energy reserves stress starts to disappear.
So, we need to meditate to build a strong energy body, not only to keep us stress-free, but also physically healthy.

Everything that we do, see, feel, experience and think of is energy. At the most basic levels we all have this exact same energy in common, and with the proper training and focus we can begin to affect this energy in various ways. This is NOT myth or supposition. If you follow the exercises that I outline and put forth the effort and focus then you or anyone else will be able to move, experiment and play with this energy. You’ll also be able to use it to increase your health, wealth and happiness on a variety of levels. In fact, you’ll find that what you can do with this energy and the vast number of ways that it can be used is limited only by your own conscience and personal ethics.
This energy is known by many names in various cultures. Commonly referred to as Chi, Qi, Ki and Prana, it’s also known as the “Breath of God” and “The Holy Spirit”. For simplicity’s sake I’m going to use the Wade-Giles translation of the Chinese word “Chi”.
Chi is simply a form of bio-electrical energy. Bio-electrical energy can be easily measured in the body by using an electrocardiogram, a modern medical instrument that measures electrical energy passing through the heart. It can also be measured using an electroencephalogram, which measures the electrical energy in the brain.
With a brief explanation of how to do it, most people can begin to easily feel and even see chi without any trouble. With slightly more training they can begin to move it around within their own body, and even through other people.
Concepts to remember
“Energy follows thought” – we’ll revisit this concept repeatedly throughout this book. As we get into the exercises you’ll find that your chi will go wherever you send it. In most of my meditation classes it usually takes people only a matter of minutes to begin to experience this and feel it for themselves.
“Energy doesn’t flow through tight muscles” – Chi is just like any other form of electricity in that resistance can decrease its flow. The less resistance you have in your body, mind and spirit the more chi you can direct for your own use. With this in mind I’ll be focusing on a variety of relaxation exercises as we go.
“Making incremental changes” – I’ll address this concept in much more detail in a later chapter. It’s important to remember that this is a path that we take to change our lives. Rather than making a few huge, unsustainable changes (such as a New Year’s Resolution), on this path we actually make many small changes that gradually add up to a new life.
In many ways these concepts are much more important than creating a lot of ‘power’. Many people focus on building chi when what they really need is increases sensitivity to the chi they already have access to. Take your time with this and follow the exercises as they’ve been laid out and you’ll find that you can get results almost instantly.

The benefits of a good meditation practice are many and well documented over the last several thousand years. Since this book is an introduction I’m only going to illustrate a few of the simpler, more common benefits. I want to stress however, that there are many more benefits than just these.
Balance, as a concept, refers to every part of life. Through meditation we become more physically balanced, as well as emotionally, mentally and spiritually balanced. Through the increased self-awareness that we then gain we also begin to become more balanced in life, love and financial issues, just to name a few. With more training and experience we begin to free ourselves of emotional attachments and begin to take a balanced look at the world and the socio-economic-political issues as well.
Health – The health benefits of meditation are astounding. The simple act of breathing properly in meditation (and the rest of the time, once you develop the habit) massages and relaxes our muscles and organs. This causes the chi to flow more easily through our body, cleansing and rejuvenating it. At deeper levels we can use meditation to focus more energy on specific organs or muscles to help cleanse them of disease and stress. Over a period of time the incremental effects will amount to vastly improved health and longevity.
Mind/Body connection – One of the interesting, and really fun (usually) benefits of a good practice is the increased Mind/Body connection. As we begin cleansing, relaxing and rejuvenating the body we become aware that we can feel and sense our mental abilities much more easily. Our reaction times decrease and our speed increases as we reduce the resistance that our chi encounters as it flows through us.
Increased abilities – As a continuation of the increased Mind/Body connection, we also discover that we begin to develop the ability to move and direct the energies around us. By the end of this book, the average person who puts in an average amount of effort should be able to influence the energies and flows they encounter and use them for their benefit and to help others. They should find that they have an increased ability to manifest the resources they need to travel down whatever life path they’ve chosen. They should also be experiencing a deeper connection to the universe and their own spirituality.
Take your time as you explore these connections to your self and the universe and see what benefits manifest in your life.

Meditation is simply the art of focusing on any given subject with total concentration. There are many systems and styles of meditation, approached with varying degrees of formality. All are useful for various folks for various reasons, and discovering which one is right for you can be an interesting journey.
Meditation has been used universally around the world for the entirety of human existence. Evidence from writings, paintings and folklore show that humans of every culture have been able to clear their minds, focus their intent and touch and use the energy around them since the dawn of our species.
While many of the modern meditation techniques are attributed to Eastern influences and teachings, the practice of meditation in shamanism, pagan rites and modern religions is well documented.
Intimidated by meditation
It’s been my experience that many people are intimidated by meditation. They tend to see meditation as difficult, or as a chore that should be done simply because it’s good for you.
One of the goals in this book is to show that meditation can be easy, fun and exciting. It can done anywhere and at any time. With practice the student can begin to manifest a wide variety of health, financial and spiritual effects in their life, and also influence the lives of those around them.
That’s not to give the impression that this is an easy path to follow. As one begins to open up to these energies and experiences they begin a process which changes the way they look at the world around them. The diligent seeker will experience cleansings of the body, mind and spirit and find themselves facing challenges that many non-meditators never have to deal with, or even believe in.
With great challenges come great rewards, however. Those drawn to this path will achieve greater connectivity to the energies, people and events that happen around them. They’ll develop new insights, abilities and a more balanced stance through which to view the universe and it’s myriad inhabitants. Increased health and longevity, increased sexual energies and a vastly more relaxed mind and body are just some of the easily measurable advantages of a good meditation practice.
If you’re intrigued and interested in developing your true inner power, then read on, as I’ll get into much more detail about all of that in the following articles.

Meditation sessions are fantastic to help you manage and balance your day-to-day life. One of the important elements you can include as part of your meditation session is incense and for a beginner this really is an important tool and can make the difference between a successful meditation session and an unsuccessful meditation session.
Humans have five core senses including touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell. Each sense plays a role in keeping your mind active and playing a role in the way you feel. The brain takes each of the sensory inputs from these senses and defines how you are going to react to your surrounding. For example, research has found that certain types of music influences the way shoppers will actually purchase products.
One research organisation found that Baroque Music played at 60 beats per minute will infact influence shoppers to spend an additional 38% in their shops. Further to this the use of incense during a meditation session can in fact make a huge difference between a successful meditation session simply because the incense will influence the sense of smell.
The most important thing you can do is to choose the right incense type. Let us take a moment to look at the different types of incense choices. I should note one thing, that there are many different incense choices which will influence your choice of incense.
#1 Starting Out – Lavender Fragrance and Incense
When you are starting out with meditation you will often be stressed, tense and all those other horrible feelings and the best type of incense to start out with is Lavender. There are many theory’s as to why lavender is a create start off tool but the bottom line we have learnt that it relaxes you and distresses you.
So, when starting out use the lavender incense in either a stick or powder form. The best incense type from a safety point of you is the stick incense. If you choose to use the powder incense type make sure that you put sand over the incense once you have finished using it.
#2 Inducing Sleep – Violet or Jasmine Incense
If your meditation session is to help induce sleep, then whilst incense may help the process of relaxation, the best type of incense to consider is the violet or jasmine incense.
#3 Sexual Energy – Rose, Gardenia or Orange Blossoms
If your meditation session is with your partner to help increase sexual desire and passion, then the best type of incense is Rose, Gardenia or Orange Blossoms. More so, if you are trying to use meditation to help sexual desire then in conjunction with the incense look at using fragrance oils as well to help spark the feeling of passion.
#4 Mood Enhancement – Fruity Fragrances
Mood enhancement incenses like fruity scents will help your mood. For example if you are feeling down then using fruit based oils and incenses like berries, bananas, melons, plum and apricot will enhance your internal mood. Might I also say your partners as well.
#5 Energy Enhancements – Citrus Fragrances
If your meditations are about getting that much needed energy and freshening the mind then the citrus fruit incense is the choice for you. You need to consider incense like bergamot, mandarins, orange, apple and even grapefruit. Even Citronella is a fantastic citrus scent for this meditation type plus it repels the moths and more importantly the mosquitos.
#6 The Sweet Smell Enhancements – Vanilla Fragrances
Sweet smell enhancements like coffee and peppermint can make a huge difference to your meditation session. The key reason we use these types of incense is simply to enhance our feelings. These also help bring forward clarity and stimulation and energy.
One word of warning though, be careful with some herbs and spices. Some herbs and spices can form foul smelling odours when burned and more so, some spices can be poisonous.
Choosing the right incense can make a huge difference towards a successful meditation session. When you are starting out then the best incense you should be using is Lavender but if you have mastered the basics then you could even try out a combination of these incense types.
