The process of mediation used to calm your mind and lead to inner-peace is centuries old. The driving force behind meditation is that if one can attain a peaceful mind, they will be free from anxiety, worries and negative forces. Ideally, they will be in complete control of their mind - controlling thoughts, feelings and anxieties.

 

One of the most important aspects of meditation is breathing. For beginners, control and focus on breathing does not come easy. Many let their minds wander to things that preoccupy their days and lose focus. Mastering your breathing pattern is the first step towards mental wellness as it helps lay the groundwork for a calm mind.

“Who am I and why am I here?”

 

A good seat and comfortable posture are ideal for meditation. Certain aspects to aim for include: straight (but not tense) back, head floating naturally above the shoulders, chin turned slightly down and pelvis tilted slightly forward. Most meditate while sitting down; sitting cross-legged is the most popular positioning. If you cannot get comfortable with these positions, try shifting around, but the main keys are to be relaxed with a straight back.

 

Many will often try to meditate while lying down. Be wary of this as it is easy to fall asleep. Though that can be relaxing in its own right, it does nothing in the process of bringing inner peace as you will find yourself waking up to the same mental disarray.

 

Take time to meditate whenever you can. It doesn’t need to be everyday, or for long periods at a time. But every chance you get to clear your thoughts and focus on your inner-self will clear your goals and ambitions and put you on your way towards mental wellness.

According to Eastern philosophy, to meditate means to think on the eternal, or rather to expand your consciousness until you are at one with the cosmos as a whole. Transcendental emotions like grief, euphoria or even love can fade away, but the universe is forever. Eventually, with practice, learning to meditate can bring you in closer attunement with the very root and purpose of existence itself.

 

Just taking the time to stop and focus on one aspect of your life can be refreshing in and of itself. This is the short-term and immediate benefit of meditation.

Meditation Shown to Increase Grey Matter and Prevent Alzheimer's Disease

 

Researchers from some of the country's most prestigious medical centers have found in their studies that meditation can impact the thickness of the cortical tissue in the brain. This type of change is significant in the way the tissue is then able to process sensory, cognitive, and emotional responses.

 

The group of researchers from Harvard, Yale, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Massachusetts General Hospital studied 20 people each one with significant commonality. They were all extensively trained in the Buddhist Insight meditation practices. This generally meant that the subjects spent about 40 minutes each day in deep meditation. This was enough to affect grey matter in the brain and increase cortical thickness.

 

Using an MRI the researchers were able to monitor the changes brought about through regular meditation. Not only were cognitive regions of the brain impacted, but the MRI showed that the normal thinning of the frontal cortex associated with aging was much slower. Also, the right hemisphere of the brain, which is responsible for attention is what’s "exercised" through meditation.

 

There are many different meditation techniques that can be used to achieve this sort of mental rejuvenation and increase grey matter. Following some of these steps can help you make the most of your time meditating. The Zen form of meditation is commonly practiced and easy to apply.

 

1. Find a relaxed position sitting on the floor or in a chair. The legs can be crossed in the lotus, half lotus or Burmese positions. The goal is a stable position that creates a tripod.

 

2. Close your eyes and gently sway or circle your body. Your hands should be folded in your lap as you begin breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth.

 

3. Next, begin counting the breaths one through ten. You continue doing this until the mind stops wandering. When a thought enters in you acknowledge the thought and then consciously push it away to being counting one to ten again. Eventually, you will have control over entering thoughts and be focused only on the counting.

 

4. The next level of mediation is to continue counting your breaths over and over again, one through ten. Each inhale and exhale together is counted as a single number. The purpose of this is to concentrate on one thought only, which is the breathing. Once you have mastered the counting concentration, the next level of meditation allows you to focus on one specific thought completely and without distractions or wandering.

 

5. There is no magical time frame or way to come out of meditation. You simply stop counting the breathing and open your eyes.

 

In the fight to prevent Alzheimer's disease, meditation can strengthen the mind in a real and physical sense.

The Greatest Secret of the Universe

 

The goal of human life, according to yogis and sages, is to unite one’s individual consciousness with the Supreme Consciousness. This union of one’s small “I” with the Cosmic “I” is also known as yoga. Anyone who has ever tried to meditate knows that achieving the final goal of yoga is not as easy as it sounds. Many people, in fact, give up the pursuit before they reach the goal. Despite this seeming difficulty there is a simple technique that can put the achievement of ultimate bliss within the reach of everyone.

 

Before I reveal the “greatest secret of the universe” it is useful to understand how the process of meditation actually works. “As you think, so you become” is the principle upon which meditation is based. If you think about something that is limited or small, then your mind becomes small.

 

On the other hand, if you forget about the physical world around you, turn your attention within and begin concentrated thinking on an infinite object your mind begins to expand. If you continue the process in a systematic way, regularly every day, then your individual consciousness will one day merge with the Supreme Consciousness.

 

The greatest obstacle on this path is your own ego. Of course you need an ego to even begin meditation. After all it only when you say “I will practice meditation today” that you can get started. However, during the process of meditation it becomes bothersome if instead of thinking about the Supreme Consciousness you begin to think about “my job”, “my house, “my car” and other things connected with your everyday life.

 

With constant practice you can overcome your attachment to mundane objects and one day arrive at a state when there will only be one thought in your mind, “I am the Supreme Consciousness.” This is a great achievement but even in this state your “I” feeling still exists. As long as your feeling of individual consciousness exists, you will remain separate from ultimate union with the Supreme Consciousness.

 

Here is where the “greatest secret of the universe” can help you out. Normally when you meditate, you are the subject and the Supreme Consciousness is the object of your thoughts. If you turn it all around and think that the Supreme Consciousness is the subject and you are his object then your meditation will change dramatically.

 

It will become much easier to remain in a meditative state when you think that the Supreme Consciousness is all around you, witnessing you, meditating on you. Instead of trying to meditate on the Supreme Consciousness, let him meditate on you! What could be simpler?

 

As simple as this technique is, it is the key to reaching a state where there is no feeling of your individual “I” and only the oneness of blissful union with the infinite.

 

There is an old story that illustrates this process. A seeker came to a door and knocked. A voice asked, “Who’s there?” The seeker responded, “I am here.” The door remained locked and there was no reply from within. The seeker returned another day and tried once more. Again when asked “Who’s there?” he replied “I am here.” And again he failed to enter.

 

Finally one day he knocked at the door and when the voice asked, “Who’s there?” he replied, “Thou” and the door opened for him.
