Living With Asthma

I began having asthma symptoms at the age of three. My mom had a cat and we soon found out the hard way that I was extremely allergic. Thirty years ago asthma medication was still basically in its infant stage and I had a really hard time growing up with asthma. I spent many a holiday in the emergency room because one of my relatives always had a cat or because just the excitement of the day would cause me to have problems breathing and there we would be most of the night with me holding onto the breathing tube.

What is asthma and what is it like? I've run into many, many people that just didn't understand what I was going through. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia on the internet describes asthma as a disease of the human respiratory system where the airways narrow, often in response to a "trigger" such as exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress. You know those little straws given with coctails? You know you can still drink through them but the holes are very small? Now imagine breathing through one of those. That's not too bad, is it? Now imagine covering that tiny hole with a cotton ball and still trying to breathe through the other end. Do this for at least 20 minutes to get the full effect. Now you have an idea of what asthma is really like.

A deep and peaceful state of relaxation

I’ve always hated having to take medicine to control my asthma. When I was young I had to take this awful liquid stuff whenever I felt an attack coming on. It smelled like liquorices but it certainly didn’t taste like that. To this day I can’t stand the smell of liquorices; it just makes me shutter. That medicine always made me feel so sick. I would always get the shakes the next day and it made me so tired. By the time I got to my teens, I was on to inhalers. Those were so much better to deal with, at least the taste wasn't so bad, but they didn’t always do the trick. I started with the over the counter ones and everyone warned me about the many side effects associated with them. I mean who wants to be thinking about the possibility of having a heart attack at the age of 14? Not to mention that these, too would give me the shakes and tremors.

Cats have always been my worst enemy. Why did all of my really, really good friends always have cats as pets? Sleepovers were always a trial and error sort of thing. Sometimes I could sleep all night and others I spent the whole night sucking on that inhaler and hoping for a little breath. I’m terrible with medicine. I really am. Having to remember to take my medication every day is not something I’m really good at. But my asthma would always remind me. Go a day or two and sure enough I was short of breath by the end of the day. I rarely slept through the night without having to reach for my instant relief inhaler.

So for approximately 30 years, this was my life. This past year I personally discovered hypnosis and meditation. I’ve been intrigued by these before but I finally decided to give them a try. So I started with a healing self hypnosis CD I had found on the internet. I did this hypnosis tape for about a week. I didn’t notice it at first but suddenly, probably about a week and a half later I realized that I hadn’t needed my inhaler. I also noticed that my depression, which I had suffered from for over 18 years, was not weighing me down either. I could breathe. I felt happy, really happy.

I do this tape periodically now but I also practice daily meditation. I love my new life. I sure wish I would’ve done this sooner. It's been more than three months now, I have been completely asthma free and I haven’t touched an inhaler once. Even when I caught a cold, which normally would activate my asthma, I was absolutely fine. There are literally thousands of meditation and hypnosis tapes for any ailment that you may have. Hypnosis and meditation; it certainly turned my life around for the better.

I love to meditate. It is so relaxing and refreshing to begin my day with about 20 minutes of meditation.

Learning Transcendental Meditation

It is not difficult to learn transcendental meditation. If you are looking to escape from the whirlwind of ringing cell phones, traffic snarls and screaming kids, transcendental meditation can provide a peaceful getaway from the craziness of everyday life.

In 1958, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi formally introduced his transcendental meditation technique. Since then, he has written several books, lectured and toured extensively all over the world and trained over 40,000 teachers. Transcendental meditation is now practiced in the workplace, at home and in medical settings. In addition, doctors and health professionals are increasingly prescribing transcendental meditation as means of combating anxiety disorders and stress.

You may be wondering what is transcendental meditation and what makes it different from other forms of meditation? One of the most exciting elements of the transcendental meditation technique is that it so simple and easy to practice. With the right focus and dedication, you can learn transcendental meditation in a matter of moments.

Basically, during the meditation session, your body enters a deep and peaceful state of relaxation, while maintaining alertness and clarity. First, the person chooses a word or image to focus on, perhaps a religious or cultural symbol that has special meaning. As the person replays this word or image over and over, the body descends into a deeper and deeper state of restfulness. The session can last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour and should take place in a calm and relaxed setting, with minimal noise and distractions.

No other meditation technique has been so extensively studied and researched. During transcendental meditation, the brain falls into a theta brain wave pattern (akin to sleep and deep relaxation), which then carries over to the state of wakefulness. Physical benefits include increased mental comprehension, focus, retention and creativity. Another interesting benefit is the actual reversal of the aging process. In a study conducted by the International Journal of Neuroscience, the biological age of practitioners of transcendental meditation was, on average, twelve years younger than their chronological age. Transcendental meditation also has positive effects on age and stress related conditions such as insomnia, high blood pressure, decreased visual acuity, hearing loss and depressed cerebral blood flow.

It is interesting to note that adherents from all religions choose to learn transcendental meditation. Although it has roots in Hinduism, the transcendental meditation technique can be applied to any cultural context. In fact, those who learn transcendental meditation are encouraged to adapt symbols that have meaning and depth for the individual. For example, a rabbi may choose to focus on a symbol or image rooted in Judaism to enhance the effectiveness of the session. In contrast, an agnostic may choose an image from nature such as a beautiful meadow or sunset to achieve relaxation. The beauty of transcendental meditation is its flexibility. http://www.meditationandmore.com

How To Relax Instantly and Meditate Effortlessly With A Proven Creative Meditation System

If you have been put off meditation by all the mumbo jumbo and strange rituals, let me show you how to get all the benefits with none of the complication.

I developed this system because I was totally stressed out and knew meditation was the answer, but didn’t want to do all the weird stuff that seemed to be involved.

Of course if you want to shave your head, wear robes, tie your legs in a knot and say ‘ommmm’… that’s cool! I’m just saying it’s not necessary to do all that for my system to work for you too.

By combining modern technology with ancient wisdom, it no longer takes weeks, or even years, to master. You can experience deep meditation literally at the touch of a button.

You will feel relaxed and calm as you release the stress of everyday life and reach a higher level of inner peace.

De-stress with mental tranquilizers

Use meditation instead of medication to help reduce your suffering from stress related problems like:

* anxiety
* depression
* sleeplessness
* irrational fears or panic attacks
* feelings of worthlessness, insecurity and pointlessness
* substance abuse
* irrational anger, impatience and irritation
* worry

Don’t make the mistake of saying “But I don’t have time to relax and meditate”. It only takes 30 minutes to relax your body, calm your mind and meditate. You will start to see results from the very first time you use my system.

Your sense of well-being will improve and you will get better quality, more restful sleep.

You will notice a decrease in your irritability and mood swings.

Take a break from the rat-race to recharge your energy and boost your creativity and ability to think clearly.

You can dramatically enhance your focus, concentration and memmory as well.

Give your self-confidence a boost by stopping negativity affecting you as much as you become aware of how much control you really have in your life.

The Five Skandhas of Buddhism and Meditative Clarity

In Buddhism, a model for understanding the evolution of the egoic mind's reactive thinking process is referred to as the five skandhas or "heaps." They are as follows.

1. Form/Ignorance-Birth of "I".

Initially, there is open space/open mind. Then a blackout (trance) occurs, a disruption, causing identification to arise, the shock of birth. We wake up perceiving form, not recognizing that we have created it. We ignore our position as creator. "Ignore-ance" is not stupidity—it is very intelligent, but reactive. The perceiver wants to possess the space, the openness is now perceived through trance as form, as possessable. Since space is really just space, at the root, this whole endeavor is futile (therefore, suffering is unavoidable).

There are three aspects of ignorance, which are simultaneous and inseparable.

(1) Separateness/birth;

(2) A sense of always so, the idea that this is the real state of affairs (positive hallucination), therefore the perceiver must maintain it. This brings about the birth of a sense of awkwardness.

(3) Self-observing ignorance. The perceiver sees the self as other, thereby beginning a relationship with an external world.

2. Feeling.

As perceivers we wonder about our relationship to form. Space is not bare space; it is full of color and energy. Since we're ignoring the openness of space, these qualities are a tremendous threat to our trance. We are trying to fix, to capture the color and energy of space, to make it solid and manageable. Because such fixation is an illusion, there is a great sense of insecurity about the reality of form. Feeling is a very efficient antidote to that insecurity: it feels real, therefore it is. We ignore evidence to the contrary.

3. Perception/Impulse (P/I).

Perception = receiving information. Impulse = responding to information. This is a rudimentary sorting process of perceived forms. After deciding whether an object is positive (+), negative (-), or neutral (0), the perceiver reacts accordingly. There are only three choices: move toward (desire), move away from (threat/hatred), or remain neutral (stupid/dull).

4. Concept.

The perceiver categorizes the objects of perception as positive (+), negative (-), or neutral (0).

Now the perceiver develops names, rules, and evaluation mechanisms (past/present/future). Perception/Impulse is an automatic reaction to intuitive feeling, but it doesn’t defend well enough our ignorance and insecurity. The intellect is needed to do a good job: it provides the ability to name and categorize. Egoic minding now goes beyond mere reaction and becomes more sophisticated; intellectual speculation arises. The intellect creates 'I' and 'I am' to encompass all the stuff of the first 3 skandas into a solid mass, an apparently solid self. It confirms and interprets the self. It puts the self into logical situations with a natural tendency toward body identification and survival to affirm the perceiver’s existence (i.e., his ignorance).

5. Consciousness.

The intuitive intelligence of the second skandha, the energy of the third, and the intellect of the fourth, combine to produce thoughts and emotions. A hallucinatory quality arises as we project our version of reality on to the world. Skandhas 1-4 develop very simply and predictably. The fifth skandha is wild and irregular. It creates unpredictable thought patterns. These are our normal state.

Concepts mix with impulse energy to create fully developed emotions, which are a mixture of energy and conceptual storyline (vivid trance!). Since the real world doesn't fit our storylines, our stories and energies are constantly thrown into conflict with themselves and worldly events. This engenders confusion. Rambling thought arises, as we attempt to maintain the validity of our trance, even when we're alone. Therefore, we're always alone with ourselves. Reading things into the world, we become completely immersed in our trance.

The power of the hallucination has a life of its own—it is called the Wheel of Life, the Six Realms of Existence. These realms, with their primary emotional character, can be summarized as follows.

1. Heaven/God Realm. Full of (conditional) goodness, beauty, and freedom. Pride predominates.

2. Jealous God Realm. Having tasted or imagined heaven, you must defend it. (The quivers of fear begin, the intimations of insubstantiality). Jealousy and envy arise.

3. Human Realm. Jealousy makes things get heavier, earthbound. Instead of alternating between jealousy and pride (too intense), there is a more solid, homey feeling. Regular, ordinary, mundane life which satisfies mundane desires. Desire predominates.

4. Animal Realm. Pursuing desire makes you get duller, heavier, more stupid, lazier. You just crawl around and moo or bark, rather than making the effort to enjoy the pleasure of pride or envy. Ignorance predominates.

5. Hungry Ghost Realm. The heaviness gets oppressive, you remember the God Realm and want to get back, but you don’t know how. This generates great hunger and thirst—unquenchable/claustrophobic—and it builds. Greed predominates.

6. Hell Realm. Continuing frustration results in loss of faith, great doubt, hopelessness, and violent reaction arise. You experience hatred for this nightmare and for yourself. Hatred predominates.

Cutting the Root of Suffering and Obstacles

This is my 18th year of teaching trainings – four per year! One of the best things about teaching this course is that I always present something I never have presented before. It may be a new idea altogether, or a core concept that I have presented many times, but that I suddenly find I am presenting in a completely new way.

I found myself explaining to this class that all problems arise from the ego -- the sense of limited fearful separation. Problems, defined as unnecessary emotional suffering, are optional! We’re not required to have them, and in fact, we never have a justifiable reason to suffer fearful emotional distress! Of course we will experience sadness and grief at the loss of a loved one, but without a sense of ego, of limited self, we do not suffer distress -- in the sense of being diminished or weakened or deprived by the experience. Without the ego, we don’t create a mournful story which we constantly replay to depress ourselves.

As I presented this in class, I was astonished -- even though these ideas are by no means new to me. Presenting to the class in this way made them new to me once again. So I started contemplating daily on my morning walks – remembering that the only problems or suffering I have are due to ego attachment. Otherwise I could be experiencing the Higher Self List 24 hours a day – Joy, Freedom, Exuberance, etc., (see my other ezine articles on choosing the Higher Self and releasing anger).

On these walks I realized that just because a particular outcome I was looking forward to has not yet appeared, nor the funds to realize it, does not require me to shrink in any fearful way. I saw how grasping and desiring this outcome was creating a temptation to feel fearful and small. So I released this attachment repeatedly and enjoyed the sense of lightness and openness in my chest, and the clarity in my mind, that resulted.

Then I went further, examining the desire to grasp “Jack,” to “be Jack,” to identify as this body/mind. I repeatedly practiced releasing my hold on being Jack, on wanting to survive as this body. Releasing at the root of ego in this way made it very clear that stress, and having problems are entirely optional.

Does it seem outrageous to think in this way – to question the idea that you are your body/mind/personality? Since we all will have to release it at the moment of death, why wait until we are forced to let go? It may seem very scary if we wait. Don’t you think it would be better to practice now, so that letting go of the body at the moment of death could actually be fun? Having released attachment to the body so thoroughly in advance – at the moment of death it would already be a done deal! Not only that, we would have lived a life free of suffering and full of Joy!

This is one way to define an enlightened being: someone who is completely free from body/mind/personality identification. By the way, body/mind/personality functions just fine, and even much better, once the grasping identification is released.

You might try repeatedly asking yourself, “Can I let go of being (your name), can I let go of thinking I am this body?” It doesn’t matter whether the answer is ‘yes’ or ‘no’ – either one is OK. Just notice your inner feeling each time you ask.

Good luck!
