Exercise Tip of The Week

Do you have dumbells?

I was shopping at Target and decided to have a look at the exercise equipment and supplies on one of their aisles and I found a large selection of dumbells. I picked a couple out ( 5 lbs. each) and have been using them almost every day since.

I keep them at my feet at the side of my desk and whenever I am on the phone or waiting for something to complete, I will pickup the dumb bells and do a little light weight lifing!

It may not be a full workout but I have noticed my arms are already getting bulkier and more toned! I highly recommend you grab a cheap set of dumbells and keep them near for impulsive use like I do!

Finding Peace of Mind

Meditation is an incredible tool capable of bringing peace of mind and creating solace in our hearts during challenging times. It has been used since ancient times to facilitate human connection to a source that we have felt to be unreachable.

There are many forms of meditation. I feel that meditation happens when we sit silently in a garden in the presence of nature or when we are perfectly still in the silence of prayer. Meditation gives us the opportunity to understand ourselves better as it is within us that we find what we are seeking to make our lives happy.

"Your mind is like a frisky monkey. Don't beat your monkey."

Oddly enough, men and women meditate in different ways. Women may sit in a bath with candles, essential oils and soothing music to create a calm environment within themselves. Men, on the other hand, literally “get away from it all” and go fishing. When they journey out into the water and sit in their boats, waiting for the fish to bite, the time spent on the water is a form of calming the mind and soothing the spirit.

I feel that any repetitive activity that creates calm within is a form of meditation.

From this calm of meditation comes control of the mind and ease in visualizing our goals. Being calm in our mind gives us the power of intense focus. This intense focus give us so much opportunity to figure it all out. In addition, visualization during meditation is an incredible way to use our imagination to affect healing in our bodies. Many have used meditation to travel into past lives, balance their chakras and connect with inner guidance.

The easiest way to meditate is to sit comfortably in a quiet place. Use music if it works for you. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Make it a game. Feel your breath enter through your mouth and leave your nostrils. Keep focusing and allow your body to relax. Soon you will feel weightlessness. I encourage you to set your intention before you enter into meditation. Is it mental quiet that you seek? or connection to your heart? or maybe it is to fall through time and visit a past life?

A complaint I have heard, time and again, is that most people find it a challenge to keep the mind still. Thoughts seem to fill their heads faster than they are able to remove them. My solution is to allow your thoughts to flow. Watch your thoughts flow through your mind and then watch them disappear in the distance. If you do not fight the thoughts flowing through your mind, you will achieve stillness much faster.

Remember, your ability to meditate will become easier with time. It takes some work at the beginning so don’t feel discouraged right away. Simply begin with a basic grounding meditation and soon enough you will find yourself on the path to inner peace.

Relaxation Techniques to Revitalize Body and Mind

We all get to a stage where we’ve just had it. We need a break. Well if a holiday is out of the question, try these relaxation techniques to revitalize your body and mind.

Meditation

Join a local meditation group or buy one of the many instructional CD’s on the market. You may find yourself falling asleep the first few times you try this but it is a great way of relaxing and also provides you with greater concentration skills.

A simple way of relaxing the mind with minimal expense or training is with a method called Progressive Muscle Relaxation.

Start by lying on the floor, on your back with your hands by your side, and your eyes closed. Imagine you are at the most relaxing place you could imagine, it may include a tropical island, waterfalls, whatever you find relaxing. Whilst you are thinking about the sight, smell, and sounds of your surrounding take 20 long, deep breathes. Once you’ve reached 20 you will be ready to begin the muscle relaxation. Start at the toes by tightening (contracting) the muscles in the toes for 5 seconds then relax them. As you relax them feel the tension sink from those muscles and escape the body into the ground. Work your way slowly through the body going to the feet, calves, upper thigh, abdominals, hands, arms, chest, shoulders, neck, and then the face. Each time feeling the body sink deeper into the floor as the tension is released from your muscles. Finish with 10 more deep breathes.

"Human brain is an electro-biochemical organ and that it reverberates to cosmic powers."

Massage

Massage is a great way to promote recovery because it increases blood flow deep into the muscles, and is really relaxing! Swedish massage is generally the lightest form but some people really like a deep tissue massage. Be sure to only consult a suitably qualified and registered masseur.

Hot/Cold Showers

Never do this if you are suffering from a virus or cold or if you have a recent soft tissue injury. It involves alternating the water temperature between hot and cold for set periods.

Start by having a shower with the water at the usual temperature and clean your skin with soap. The temperature is then alternated between hot (35-38°C) for 1-2 minutes, then cold (10-16°C) for 10-30 seconds. Repeat this 3 times then finish with a shower at normal temperature. Always drink plenty of water when you get out.

Hot/Cold Spa

Guidelines are the same as for the Hot/Cold Showers but 3-4 minutes is spent in the spa and 30-60 seconds is spent in the cold bath.

Rest Days

If you exercise every other day of the week do nothing on this day. Sunday’s are great for this!

Sleep

Sleep is often what people do when they have finished everything else for that day but it must become a higher priority. A lack of sleep makes people irrational, moody, and low on energy. Try to get 7-9 hours sleep per night. To ensure a great night sleep try to avoid too much alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and high protein meals.

Cross Training

Cross Training is participating in an activity which is different to your normal training regime. Indoor rock-climbing, cycling, rowing, basketball, or in-line skating are just a few examples. The only requirement is that the intensity must be light.

Music

Just kick back, relax, and listen to any music that you enjoy. You will be surprised at how mentally refreshing this can be!

Movies

Go and watch a new movie at the cinema or hire out one of your favourites from the video store. Once again, a great way to relieve stress and relax mentally!

How to Use White Noise

White noise is: A sound containing a blend of all the audible frequencies distributed equally over the range of the frequency band. White noise is analogous to white light which contains all the colors of the rainbow together. The term “white noise” as used in this article will be applied a little looser to include a host of sounds (waterfall, rain and brook as examples) used for blocking out unwanted sounds.

Because white noise contains most sound frequencies, it is commonly used to mask other sounds. If you are in a hotel and voices from the room next-door are leaking into your room, you might turn on a fan to drown out the voices. The fan produces a good approximation of white noise. How does this "white" sound work and why does it mask out other noise?

Here is one way to think about it. Let's say two people are talking at the same time. Your brain can normally pick out one of the two voices and actually listen to it and understand it. If three people are talking simultaneously, your brain can probably still pick out one voice. However, if 1,000 people are talking simultaneously, there is no way that your brain can pick out one voice.

It turns out that 1,000 people talking together sounds a lot like white noise. So when you turn on a fan to create white noise, you are essentially creating a source of 1,000 voices. The voice next-door makes it 1,001 voices, and your brain can't pick it out anymore. One thing to keep in mind when using white noise is that more is not always better - it is usually best to use just enough to help mask the offending noise, not completely overwhelm it.

There are three sources of white noise that are commonly used to help mask out annoying sounds: mechanically generated, electronically generated and recordings usually on CD format.

The mechanical devices produce a sound very close to that of a fan. The Sleepmate by Marpac is this type of device and has been around for a long time. This is the most popular type of white noise machine; probably because it produces a sound that we are all familiar with and don’t find unpleasant. One drawback of the mechanical units is that they are limited in volume. Since they produce the sound mechanically, it isn’t possible to simply turn up the volume.

White noise is commonly generated with a digital or electronic sound synthesizing device. Sound designers, with some processing and filtering, can create a multitude of effects such as wind, rain, waterfall or surf. The main consideration when choosing a digital device is if the device loops a recorded clip of sound or synthesizes its own sound. By looping we refer to a few seconds of sound that is digitally recorded and played over and over. They try to match up the end with the beginning but if you listen carefully you can detect where the segment begins - this is irritating to some people. The better digital sound devices actually synthesize the sound instead of playing a recording, therefore no looping.

Compact discs are a popular and inexpensive way (not counting the cost of a stereo system) to bring white noise into your home or office. You can get almost any sound imaginable but the most commonly used are nature sounds like rain, thunder or babbling brooks and nature sounds overlaid with soft music. The advantages of CDs are a high quality sound and low cost. The disadvantage is that, if you are using the sound to help you sleep, the interruption when changing tracks or cycling will often times wake you up. Generally the best uses for CDs are for office privacy, meditation or just relaxing.

Meditation

Hello, sample some of the arguments below. But mind you, this is not an opinionated writer that is trying to forward his profound knowledge on an altruistic art that is meditation. All I can ask you is to go about this page with an open mind. Because, meditation is something that is physical and tangible. And it can always be sensed but the same can not be said about the results or benefits of meditating. This is the essence of meditation. This is the state of mind and body that it promises. OK. Here we go.

• Meditation activates the brains neural networks and brain chemistry to achieve and maintain meditative states of mind.

• Through meditation your mind and body acquire some energy field.

• Meditation shows the meaning of life and it helps achieve peace within ourselves.

• You can realize god through meditation (that meditation is the path to god and salvation).

• Your any activity in the right earnest and undistracted mind is meditation.

• You need to concentrate hard to meditate.

• No, let the mind free, do not concentrate.

(The word meditation is a Latin derivative of meditari and mederi (think and heal).

Now, my friends, should we go about these arguments one at a step, we understand some are acceptable and some are not. Why so? (Are you keeping your mind open?) After all, these arguments are made by the stalwarts who practice meditation every day!

Simple! Meditation is applying mind over body in a very organized way to concentrate more. Best way to do so is concentrate on your own breathing. It is usually done at a pristine time and place though there is no such compulsion. And while you are at it you tend to forget the rest of the world around you because you concentrated hard. This is realized once you are out of that state (Should we call it trance?)

I say, my friends, would you not agree such tranquility brings balance to ones mind that otherwise wanders? And that it is not some thing achievable only through meditation? Well, what ever that may be, if you just took the generic meaning of meditation, you know what to seek in it and how.

The controlled mind is what many have attained without knowing they meditated. To me it is a genuine way of over powering the fickle mind. Hey, did I hear someone just mention an idle mind is devil’s work shop?

The Mind is Like a Frisky Monkey

People are often so discouraged about the results of their meditative efforts.

They feel that they are not only not relaxed, but anxious because they couldn't focus at all. Well, to quote one of my favorite teachers, George Curnoles, "Your mind is like a frisky monkey. Don't beat your monkey."

No, that's not an R-rated statement, but a realistic way to look at how your mind works.

Do you find yourself unable to focus on the goal of your meditation, whether it is a candle flame, a sound, a thought, a concept? Then your mind is just acting normally. Our minds and thought processes are so complex, that we can literally hold multi-dimensional focuses at the same time.

When you let yourself relax in your meditation, you mind will often head off in the direction of that latest thought, image, sound, dream or problem you're working on. If you are at an early phase of developing your meditation skills, just let the mind go. Here's the secret: go ahead and follow the thought rather than wrench yourself back with frustration to the original goal.

So, how will you be able to control your thoughts and direct your meditations if you do this? Easy. While you let your mind take those avenues of exploration, just pay attention. Instead of waking up in a few minutes to realize that you are no longer where you wanted to focus, just follow the trail. Then see if you can follow the trail backwards to the point you diverted from your goal.

This will develop a strong focused mind and in no time at all, you'll be a successful, focused meditator.

Using this approach, the Basic Meditation Technique can be quickly learned since you'll avoid the frustration of fighting your wandering mind and simply follow it's wanderings, gently bringing the mind back to your intended focus.

Be kind to that little monkey of a mind and it will serve you well.
