The Truth: Avoiding Diet Supplement Confusion Forever

I often get asked what supplements are best for fat loss. My answer to this question isn't a fat burner, protein, or creatine. The answer to this question in DIET. Yes, diet. People usually look confused after hearing my answer. They expect to hear "XYZ fat burner" or "XYZ protein". Well the truth is that supplements need to be incorporated into an overall diet program. They should be intertwined to create a comprehensive nutrition program. Basically, supplements make your diet easier to maintain on an everyday basis. However, there are three supplements that should be at the top of your shopping list when dieting to lose body fat. They are, in order of importance, Meal Replacements, Whey Protein and Thermogenic Fat Burners.

You would use two meal replacements and eat four solid food meals or you could use three meal replacements and eat three solid food meals.

Meal Replacements are meant to do exactly what their name suggests, they replace your meals. When your trying to lose body fat, you should be eating at least 5-6 meals a day. Two to Three of these meals could be meal replacements. So you would use two meal replacements and eat four solid food meals or you could use three meal replacements and eat three solid food meals. Basically use the Meal Replacements at your convenience to mold your nutrition program to your schedule. Some meal replacements that I like are AST's Nytro-pro 40, Dymatize Advantage Matrix or Labrada Lean Body. All of these taste great and are very high quality. My personal favorite is the Nytropro, but they will all work great!

Whey Protein is a great supplement for losing body fat because it helps maintain and build lean mass, which will in turn keep your metabolism running at a high level. This will make it easier for you to burn off excess body fat. The best way to use Whey Protein is to take a whey protein shake post workout, and before bed. The serving size depends on your body weight. Two scoops or approximately 40 grams would be good for a man, One scoop or about 20 grams would be good for a woman ( these are very general recommendations, adjust the serving size appropriately). These shakes would be considered "meals" in a diet program calling for 5-6 meals. Some protein brands that I like are AST's VP2 (fruit punch is awesome), Dymatize Elite Whey (Chocolate Mint flavor is the best tasting protein I have ever tried. EVER!) and Natures Best Isopure is a great protein also.

Lastly, a thermogenic fat burner can greatly increase fat loss results. When added to a solid diet and exercise program, fat burners can make a huge difference in the amount of fat lost. They are formulated to slightly increase your metabolism over the course of the day, resulting in a large amount of calories burned over time. These products should only be added if you are following a sound diet, otherwise the results will be minimal. Some great thermogenic fat burners are Nutrex Lipo-6, Isotori Lean System 7 and BSN Thermonex.

By adding these three different kinds of supplements into your diet and exercise program the pounds will be melting off in no time. Remember, no one supplement is the answer. By using the proper supplements together is how you achieve optimal results. Remember this: DIET + EXERCISE + SUPPLEMENTS = RESULTS. I guarantee that if any part of this formula is missing, the desired results will be less than optimal. So stick with the formula, and you'll be happy in the end.

Ginseng was one of the earliest marketable herbs harvested in the United States.

American Ginseng

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius, L.) is a perennial herb and grows wild in deciduous forests of the eastern United States. American ginseng is an erect plant that reaches a height of 0.3 to 0.7 meters and has fusiform roots, greenish-white flowers and red berries. The roots and rhizomes are often branched or forked, and they bring a premium price if they resemble a human form. Wild ginseng once thrived along most of the nation's eastern seaboard, from Maine to Alabama and west to Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. American ginseng, (panax quinquefolium) was at one time plentiful in all mountainous regions of the United States. However, it was over-harvested in the mid-1970s, and was subsequently defined as an endangered species. Now, only licensed ginseng harvesters are allowed to dig for the wild ginseng root.

Wild ginseng was one of Minnesota's first major exports. In 1860, more than 120 tons of dried ginseng roots were shipped from the Minnesota to China. American ginseng is similar to Asian ginseng, Panax ginseng, L. that grows wild in Northern Manchuria and has been harvested there for thousands of years. Currently, 18 states issue licenses to export it. In Wisconsin and several other states where ginseng is cultivated, a permit is not required to export artificially propagated ginseng.

American ginseng is also commonly cultivated. It is relatively easy to grow. The root takes approximately 5 years to reach harvesting maturity. American ginseng plants are generally started from seeds. Seedlings or roots for transplanting are available commercially but used infrequently. Seeds are planted in the fall and germinate in the spring.

American Ginseng is not a drug and should not be taken as such. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified it as a “generally recognized safe food” (GRAS).

Bodybuilding Supplements, Do They Really Work?

Let's face it, when it comes to hyping a product, the bodybuilding supplement industry would be hard to beat. Incredible claims of huge, steroid like, muscle growth and strength are commonplace and it seems that every new product reaches a new high on the "Hype-Meter".

Having been involved in bodybuilding for over 20 years, I think I can offer at least some input and guidance on what a novice bodybuilder can expect when it comes to purchasing supplements with their hard earned money.

One of the questions I hear more than any other from young bodybuilders looking to get huge all the way to stay at home moms looking to lose a little weight is, "Does this stuff really work"? My reply is always the same, "What do you mean by, 'does it work'"? The reason I give this reply is that most people seem to expect some sort of magic bullet when it comes to supplements. The reality is that, yes, many of these supplements do "work" but only when they are implemented in a complete fitness program.

A perfect example would be fat burners. The majority of fat burners that are currently on the market contain 3 or 4 herbal ingredients that are designed to increase your metabolism and/or decrease the appetite. Most people who purchase these products have a genuine desire to lose weight. And most of them will also try to incorporate a fat burner into their weight loss program that also includes proper nutrition and exercise. There are however some people who think that they will "melt away pounds" by simply taking the supplement and not doing any work on their own. The "magic bullet" mentality only leads to frustration when the product in question doesn't "work" for them.

When it comes to the niche market of bodybuilding supplements however, nothing can quite come close to the hype. It's important to keep in mind that the manufacturers of these supplements are paying professional bodybuilders to endorse their products. When a young man (or boy) sees a picture of a professional bodybuilder holding up a can or jar of a particular product, the image of that huge athlete is a very powerful advertising tool. Combine that with the over-the-top ad copy and you can see why many people are skeptical of these products. It would seem that rather than asking "Do they work?", the real question should be, "Will I look like that if I take this?"

The hard, cold answer to that question would be a resounding, "No". The reality is that all professional bodybuilders lead an extreme lifestyle that involves training, eating, sleeping and most importantly, huge amounts of anabolic steroids, growth hormone and other drugs to get the degree of muscle they have. They did not get that muscular simply by using bodybuilding supplements.

The good news however is that bodybuilding supplements can indeed help you in your training. Once again, assuming that your workouts are productive, your diet is one of good nutrition and you are allowing your body to recover by getting proper sleep, there are many supplements that are fantastic to help you increase your muscle mass, lose weight, increase pumps and gain strength.

Creatine, NO(Nitric Oxide) boosters, testosterone boosters, weight gainers and more are all excellent choices to help you reach your goals. Just remember, there are no magic pills that will turn you into a giant bodybuilder overnight but if you are committed to bodybuilding and ask me "Do bodybuilding supplements work?", I'd definitely say, "Yes!"

Supplement Spotlight: BSN NO-Xplode

NO-Xplode is the only pre-workout supplement that produces noticeable results in strength, energy, performance, and training intensity. Within minutes of taking it, you will notice it working in your body, giving you strength and energy to perform at your highest potential. When taking NO-Xplode, you will also notice an improvement with mental focus, endurance, muscular work capacity, and an increased blood flow of vital nutrients to working muscle tissue.

The best part about NO-Xplode is that it contains no hormones. NO-Xplode`s blend of nootropics and methylxanthine energizes your brain and body with the most focused intensity possible. The complex blend of phospho-electrolyte replacers and glycerol hydrating polymers is a powerful magnet for protein, carbs, water, creatine, and muscle building nutrients into the muscle cells. This complex blend significantly increases the pump, fuels the body for an intense training session, replenishes lost electrolytes, reduces lactic acid build up, and overloads the muscles with vital nutrients for growth.

With the consumption of NO-Xplode, you may experience some of the side effects that have been reported. Although rare, you may experience stomach problems, diarrhea, and headaches. NO-Xplode can also increase you blood pressure, which means that severely overweight people should NOT use this product. Other consumers reported sexual dysfunctions, insomnia, and increased tension. If you have a history of any of these side effects, then you should consult your doctor prior to the use of NO-Xplode.

NO-Xplode is one of the best selling supplements on the market today, and for good reason. It actually works! One consumer on illpumpyouup.com had this to say about NO-Xplode:

"Out of all of the products out there (xpand, cellmass , v12 turbo, superpump 250, blitz cycle), this is by far the best there is. TRUST ME Im already on my 7th container and the results I get from working out with this stuff is phenomenal. My energy skyrockets everytime. I get more sets in and even more weight. It seems to work almost instantaneously. Give it 2-3 minutes, and BAM, the energy is there."
