Dietary Supplements
A dietary supplement is a product that a person takes by mouth, which contains nutritional ingredients meant for addition to the normal diet. These extra nutritional ingredients may include minerals, vitamins, botanicals, herbs, amino acids, organ tissues, metabolites and glandular. Ingredients like extracts or combinations such as soft gels, liquids, oils, capsules, tablets and powders can also constitute a dietary supplement.
Dietary supplements can also be found as bars and in other forms but they are classified as food and not as drugs.
Classifications of Dietary Supplements
The dietary supplements can be classified into the following four classes.
Herbs and Botanicals
Dietary supplements of herbs consist of natural products. These products are active ingredients or extracts from plant roots, stems, seeds, leaves, flowers or buds. An herbal product can be an extract of two or more active ingredients or they may be whole plant. Herbal extracts are being used to maintain low cholesterol, good health and help in disease control. People generally have a wrong view that because they are natural, these dietary supplements are good for health.
An example of a dangerous dietary supplement is ephedra extract. This is generally used for weight loss and energy boosting. It causes muscle injury, blood pressure, nerve damage, and stroke or memory loss. It is banned, but any dietary supplement containing this herb extract should never be used.
Many herbs prove to be very good dietary supplements. Some of these are listed below.
Grape Seed Antioxidant
Grape seed dietary supplement has concentrated extract of active ingredients from the seed of grapes. This product shows antioxidant properties and acts as a free radicals remover.
Oxy-Gen 3 flavors
Oxy-Gen is an Aloe Vera dietary supplement that provides improved oxygen for the human body.
Other herbal dietary supplements include cranberry, garlic, green tea, ginkgo biloba, etc.
Vitamins
Vitamin dietary supplements contain essential vitamins that are needed by many cell reactions and body functions. Certain vitamins exhibit antioxidant behavior too which remove the free radicals from the body. Some vitamins present in dietary supplements are not manufactured within human body such as vitamin K and vitamin D. A healthy body that has a supply of good balanced diet doesn’t need vitamin supplements, as over usage of such dietary supplements can cause liver damage.
Vitamins are of two types: water soluble and fat soluble. The water soluble vitamins such as vitamin C and the 7 vitamin Bs can dissolve in water and hence are not stored in any significant amount within the human body. The fat soluble vitamins such as Vitamin A, D, E and K are stored in the fats of the body. Fresh fruits or vitamin dietary supplement is used by people to ensure proper amount of water soluble vitamins.
Vitamin A & D (25,000 IU/1,000 IU)
This dietary supplement is rich in vitamin A and vitamin D, which are both needed by many cell functions and body reactions for release of energy.
B-12 / Folic Acid Combo
B12 and folic acid belong to the vitamin B family and support action of the C vitamin. It also helps to strengthen the acid present in the stomach for better digestion.
Other vitamin dietary supplements include vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, vitamin K, Vitamin B12, B6, B3 and many more.
Minerals
Mineral dietary supplements contain minerals required by body fluids and tissues like bones, brain, teeth, liver, brain, blood, muscle and nerve cells. There are approximately 60 minerals that are present in a human body but 22 out of them are necessary. To have the proper amounts of minerals, good healthy food and dietary supplements are advised.
Dietary supplements contain two types of minerals required by the body. The major minerals, which are the ones that are required by the body in large amounts, are calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, chlorides and sulfur. Body requirement for these minerals is almost 250 grams each day. The trace minerals are copper, iodine, fluoride, manganese, iron, zinc and chromium and are required in small quantities. The amount that should be taken of trace mineral is about 20 milligram each day.
Liquid Life Ultra Calcium w/Ostivone
This mineral dietary supplement contains easily absorbing calcium along with several other trace minerals.
75 Plant Derived Minerals
75 plant derived mineral dietary supplement is natural and the purest source of minerals. It provides many minerals not produced within the body.
Nutritional Supplements
These dietary supplements include fish oils, compounds present in food such as flavonoids, CoQ10 and many more.
Who needs dietary Supplements?
Dietary supplements are needed by all those people who have deficiency of certain nutrients in their diet or body due to lack of proper vitamin and mineral rich foods or lack of enough food. Athletes, vegetarians, older people and pregnant women can use dietary supplements for better health.
Dietary Supplement Selection and Use
Dietary supplements provide extra nutritional ingredients and are not a replacement of food. Natural foods provide many complex compounds that are needed by the human body in many function and cell metabolism. These products are only to be used to improve body function. Before you actually opt for a supplement bear the following points in mind.
It may be wise to avoid all the dietary supplements that have large or mega servings. Over usage can cause nutrient toxicity. Many dietary supplements contain herbal and botanical extracts that are known to cause severe side effects. You must have complete and viable information about the ingredients. Natural vitamins are more expensive and if any company offers very low prices then they may not be genuine. Check the label of the supplement and note the amount of nutrients in each serving. The label of the medicine should have USP written on it which means that the dietary supplement meets the US Pharmacopeia standards.
There are some known dietary supplements that a person should not take. Some of these include Aristolochic acid that is toxic for the kidney, comfrey that causes liver disease, kava that causes liver damage, Tiratricol that can cause heart attacks, chaparral that causes hepatitis, and usnic acid that is toxic to the liver. There are other dietary supplements in the market that have side effects, as well.

You can obtain Lycopene from a tomato species classification, Solanum lycopersicum. Ironically, the uppermost concentrations of lycopene are not in tomatoes but actually in watermelons. Almost all-dietary lycopene comes from tomatoes.
Lycopene can help protect humans from certain health disorders. There is proof in the claim that regular intake of lycopene reduces the risk of prostrate cancer in men.
There are numerous studies and research conducted regarding the health benefits of lycopene. Lycopene gives vegetables and fruits, such as the tomatoes, the color pink and grapefruit and watermelon, the color red. Studies prove that continuous intake of fruits and vegetables rich in lycopene can lower the risk of having prostrate cancer and other cardiovascular diseases.
In the year 1995, Harvard University made a study with 47,894 men, wherein researchers found out that eating at least 10 or more serving a week of tomato products reduced risk of prostrate cancer by as much as 34 percent. Upon examining the prostrate tissue of the men subject for study, they found that there was less notable growth of cancer cells.
The shielding upshot of antioxidants on heart disease was recognized. In current studies conducted, they declared that men who have the highest amount of lycopene in their body do not have as much possibility to suffer a heart attack as those with less lycopene in their body.
Getting lycopene for our body is by means of eating foods rich in lycopene or drinking supplements high in lycopene. The vegetables and fruits rich in lycopene are tomato products such as spaghetti sauce, tomato juice, ketchup, pizza sauce and more. Other fruits such as grapefruit and watermelon also provide lycopene.
The body absorbs lycopene better when it is consumed in processed tomato products, rather than fresh tomatoes.
In another study conducted, it shows that lycopene from tomato paste was absorbed 2.5 times better than those from fresh tomatoes. Conversely, cooking tomato with just a little oil will result to a greater amount of lycopene.
For those planning to take dietary supplements for lycopene, though, please are informed that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration do not sternly advocate herbs and dietary supplements. This is for the reason that taking these supplements would not guarantee you of the efficiency, cleanliness and safety that it promises.
If you are planning to take supplements, your decision might as well need a deeper thought. For people taking other medicines, you should primarily consult a doctor regarding the matter.
Lycopene supplements possess antioxidant properties. In addition, lycopene with a combination of other carotenoids may in fact help reduce sunburn. Researchers have found out taking supplements for 12 weeks with 24 milligrams per day of a combination of carotenoids improve ultraviolent- induced sunburn and is comparable to the treatment with 24 milligrams per day of beta-carotene. One more thing, taking lycopene orally may shrink the possibility of exercise-induced asthma. However, studies say that it cannot actually enhance the function of the immune system.
Taking lycopene from dietary supplements reflects no negative side effects. Nonetheless, pregnant and breast feeding women are not advised to take these supplements since there are no sufficient evidence to say whether it has an adverse effect to a developing infant.
Read the indications provided in the dietary supplements you are taking. If necessary, inform your doctor of your doses.

Scientists from the University of South Florida found that high doses of the antioxidant epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) found in green tea prevented Alzheimer's-like damage in the brains of mice bred to develop symptoms of this disease.
One of the possible causes of Alzheimer's disease is the harmful accumulation of beta-amyloid, which is just a very small protein fragment of a larger protein in brain cells. After several months of injecting the mice with pure EGCG on a daily basis, the nerve cells of the mice generated 54% less beta-amyloid proteins than not-treated mice.
In the case of humans, we would need a daily dose of 1,500 to 1,600 mg of pure EGCG to achieve the similar effect experienced by the mice and this daily dose has been studied in healthy human volunteers and was found to be safe and well tolerated. The drinking of green tea alone would not be sufficient to have this particular effect.

Creatine is a substance that helps increase energy at the cellular level. Without getting too technical we’ll examine how this works. Creatine supplementation has become a science of its own. There are many different theories about whether it works or not, and how it works.
When we look at energy at a cellular level it is created by the creation and breakdown of chains of molecules. ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate) is one of these molecular structures. There are three phosphates attached to the molecule. When a phosphate is separated from the ATP molecule energy is released from the breaking of the connection. This energy is used by the cells. The molecular structure is then changed and what was once ATP becomes ADP (adenosine di-phosphate) with only two phosphates attached. This new molecule begins searching for a free phosphate somewhere to reattach.
The muscles go through three energy phases. The first, and the one we are looking at, is the ATP-PC system where ATP is broken down for energy and rebuilt. This system is the immediate energy system and according to some research can last as long as three minutes, or until all ATP is depleted and there are no free floating phosphates. The next system is the lactic acid system in which the various metabolic processes produce energy and give off lactic acid. This system last approximately ten to twelve minutes and then the aerobic system kicks in. This system carries the body’s energy needs over extended periods. It is important to note that one system doesn’t stop when the other takes over. They do overlap and the ATP-PC system kicks in every once in a while.
With all of the technical stuff out of the way, let’s look at Creatine and what it does. Creatine introduces phosphates into the energy cycle allowing ATP to be built for a longer amount of time. It is also believed that the body will produce more stored ATP for future use with regular supplementation of Creatine. This allows for a more explosive muscular contraction and a longer lasting ATP cycle. This is important because the muscle contractions are more intense and stronger during the ATP energy cycle.
Creatine is also said to pull more water into the muscles giving them a fuller appearance. This added water also provides more leverage and aids at the cellular level. This increase in water uptake can be dangerous if a person does not drink adequate water during use. Making sure to drink plenty of water keeps the body from becoming dehydrated and enhances the efficiency of the creatine.
There are many different versions of creatine on the market and each claim to work in a different, but better, way than the others. Any product that will introduce more phosphates at the cellular level and increase energy production and release will benefit muscular energy and strength. Whether you are looking for more power while lifting, more explosive take off when sprinting, a longer work capacity or fuller muscles creatine can be an asset to your program.

Protein. It is the building block of our bodies. Although the human body is about two-thirds water the proteins form the structure and function of the system. Along with fats, proteins form the structure at our joints and along our skeletal system. Protein is also important in enzyme production, regulation of cells and hormones, and in immune function. Protein is the structural component of muscle in our bodies.
Protein is made up of amino acids in various configurations. When we eat proteins, and they are digested, they are broken down to their amino acids again. These amino acids are then sent to areas in the body where they will serve a function. Some amino acids can be produced in the body but others must be taken in through our food, or supplements. These are called essential amino acids. Proteins that contain all of the essential amino acids are complete proteins. Incomplete proteins, such as some vegetables and grains, are missing one or more of the essential amino acids.
Our muscles are designed to move use around and support our skeletal system. When they are worked within their normal range of motion and strength level they tear slightly and repair quickly. When we work our muscles beyond their normal capacity the fibers tear significantly and must recover and repair to reach full potential again. Since muscles are made up of proteins and water they must receive those amino acids that we digested to rebuild the proteins in the muscle. When we neglect these muscles and do not supply them with the proper proteins they take longer to recover and in severe cases rob other muscle proteins to repair themselves.
Protein ingested through a healthy diet is broken down and then stored for muscle repair as needed. It is also used for energy when other sources are depleted. Due to the inability of the body to produce nine of the amino acids the body cannot repair, or build new, muscle without protein taken in through ingestion. Fatigue, insulin resistance, loss of muscle mass, and hormonal irregularities are symptoms of protein deficiency. None of these is conducive to optimal performance or muscular gain. No other macronutrient can be converted to protein. Fats and carbohydrates can be used for energy but not for muscle repair or production.
Ensuring adequate protein intake is paramount in building muscle and ensuring quick recovery. Without proteins, and the amino acids from those proteins, the body will not be able to repair damages to the muscles and other structures of the body. If quality protein is not taken in through diet, or supplementation, the body will have to rob protein from the muscles to repair daily damage to cells and organs. This leads to muscle loss and decreased performance.
Protein intake needs to be a priority for anyone who is taxing their muscles through daily workouts or strenuous work. This protein is needed for most of the body’s functions and cannot be produced by the body itself. Complete proteins and supplementation are good ways to get the needed protein.
