Health Tip of The Week

Do you have dumbells?

I was shopping at Target and decided to have a look at the exercise equipment and supplies on one of their aisles and I found a large selection of dumbells. I picked a couple out ( 5 lbs. each) and have been using them almost every day since.

I keep them at my feet at the side of my desk and whenever I am on the phone or waiting for something to complete, I will pickup the dumb bells and do a little light weight lifing!

It may not be a full workout but I have noticed my arms are already getting bulkier and more toned! I highly recommend you grab a cheap set of dumbells and keep them near for impulsive use like I do!

Essential Fatty Acids. Healthy Treadmills Losing Weight

We are happy to present articles about Essential Fatty Acids!

All Things a Poison - Sometimes a Little Poison is Just What the Doctor Should Order!

Health - it's always good to see what is going on!

If you are recommending trace minerals to your patients, chances are you are recommending toxic substances. The strange paradox is, many of these toxic minerals are also essential for life! With the recent popularity of coral calcium, colloidal mineral cocktails, and other supplements containing 70 or more trace minerals, the question of how toxic elements such as arsenic, cadmium, antimony, and vanadium can be safe needs to be addressed. Truth is, each of these minerals is deemed an “essential mineral” by the National Research Council – that is, essential for human or animal life and only available to the body by ingestion of foods.

Take arsenic for example. This well known deadly poison is also required for life (NRC 1989). The average human being has 20 mg of arsenic distributed throughout the body1. Studies on rats have shown a deficiency of arsenic is associated with retarded growth1. Similar information is available on all 25 essential minerals – each is necessary, yet they will all have severe adverse effects in large quantities. The famous Swiss Physician, Paracelcus summarized this phenomenon in the 1400’s when he said “All substances are poisons; there is none which is not a poison. The right dose differentiates a poison and a remedy”. Even oxygen and water taken in extreme amounts can prove toxic.

which minerals are considered essential?

But which minerals are considered essential? 100 years ago, only 14 elements were thought to be essential. In 1950, copper, manganese, zinc and cobalt were added. Late in the 1950’s selenium was included. 1975 saw the inclusion of fluorine and silicon. A few years later boron was added. Today, 25 are classified as essential! The rest are not considered essential or ruled as non-essential. It should be noted that 60 trace minerals are found in human milk including aluminum, bromine, vanadium and nickel, which were previously considered unimportant, so we may eventually learn that up to 60 are essential or important minerals.

It is interesting that we know of at least 25 essential minerals and yet our soil is only replenished with the big three: Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium (NPK). Many trace minerals have become entirely absent in the land growing feed for their cattle so farmers have begun supplementing their beef and dairy herds because it makes economic sense – it is more profitable to buy trace mineral supplements and feed it to their cows than to suffer losses from trace mineral deficiency diseases. Heifers on trace mineral programs produced 3.7 pounds per day more milk compared to non-supplemented groups, conception rates improved significantly, weaning weights in calves were higher and overall herd health improved2.

Not only cattle benefit from adding trace minerals to their diets. A two year study raising meat chickens using Brazilian Coral Minerals compared to birds on growth hormone was conducted at University of Vila Velha, Brazil. The result showed similar growth rates, but the chickens on coral were more energetic and hence produced a leaner, higher protein, lower fat bird3.

Think about that. Farmers find it cost effective to buy trace minerals and add it to animals’ foods because the animals are not getting these elements from the produce of the fields. Humans eat from those same depleted fields and yet many of us do not think about supplementing ourselves. Perhaps it is time to reassess our fears of “toxic” trace minerals. Trace minerals can be toxic in large quantities, but equally damaging to health, and more prevalent, is their absence.

How to Choose the Right Nutrition Supplements for Healthy Vision

Healthy vision requires healthy eating. The right nutrition – good, natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds – supplies us with the vitamins, minerals, trace elements and essential fatty acids so vital to our general health and our eye health.

So why the need for nutrition supplements? Well, unless you always eat between five and nine portions of organic fruit and vegetables daily as well as three servings of nuts and seeds and whole grains, you may well benefit by taking certain carefully chosen nutrition supplements. Even if you do follow such a dietary regime, studies have shown that, to achieve levels of Vitamins C and E and zinc associated with eye health benefits, a good diet is not enough.

Although a good, healthy diet is not considered sufficient to maintain optimal vision health, you should not abandon eating healthily. Replacing a healthy diet with processed food and nutrition supplements is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The anti-oxidants and fiber found in natural foods are invaluable for their anti-carcenogenic (cancer-fighting) properties.

Which supplements should you be looking out for to promote healthy vision? A number of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and amino acids are considered to be promoters of healthy vision. These include:

  • The antioxidants Vitamins C and E.

  • The carotenoids beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin. These help enhance the repair of epithelial tissue which is particularly relevant to healthy vision. Following corrective vision surgery to correct myopia and astigmatism, the epithelium is rubbed away and the cornea reshaped. Taking these nutrients over a lengthy period prior to surgery can aid a speedy recovery and promote healing.

  • The elements zinc, selenium and calcium.

  • Vitamins of the B complex folic acid and thiamin.

  • Omega 3 essential fatty acids.

  • The amino acids Alpha Lipoic Acid and N-Acetyl Cysteine.

  • Multiple vitamins, which have been formulated especially to promote eye health, will contain all or most of the above constituents. But opinion is divided over taking multivitamin supplements. With the exception of the B complex vitamins, which are best taken together, many nutritionists advocate taking antioxidants and other specific nutrients singly.

This seems odd since nutrients found in natural sources act synergistically. This means they work together in highly complex ways. Your body is genetically set up to receive these elements bound together in plant complexes.

It seems, though, that taking these nutrients singly has two distinct advantages. First, it allows you to choose the particular nutrients which will be of greatest benefit to you. Second, you can select nutrients of the required strength. To retard the progression of certain eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and cataract, high levels of antioxidant Vitamins C and E and the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are recommended.

Besides taking these supplements singly, there is a question of freshness to take into account. Vitamins, minerals and other supplements which are not fresh, are toxic to the body and can be harmful. As a precautionary measure, check that the seal on the bottle is unbroken.

It is also a good idea to buy capsules instead of tablets. Capsules are absorbed more easily. They have a gelatin outer shell that dissolves easily on contact with your digestive system, and allows the active ingredients to enter the blood stream very quickly. Tablets are much more likely to pass straight through the body

Some manufacturers carefully formulate their vitamins so that absorption is enhanced for people with allergies or digestive problems. This is achieved by specially emulsifying chemical-free vitamins which can then be added to juice or water or, if preferred, taken under the tongue.

Vitamin E, for example, can be bought nitrogen-packed to protect against oxidation and blended in pure, cold-pressed olive oil. It is hypoallergenic and easily absorbed. Flaxseed oil, a rich natural source of essential fatty acids and the richest known source of Omega 3 fatty acids, can be purchased in capsules blended with Vitamins C and E and emulsified in olive oil.

Both Vitamin E and flaxseed oil are particularly good nutrients to promote healthy vision. Their antioxidant properties assist in retarding premature aging, and since the eye is one of the most delicate and easily-degraded organs of the body, their long-term use can be invaluable in preventing the onset of eye disease.

Keeping with the allergy theme, good nutrition supplements should not contain dairy products as fillers. Those with allergies or food intolerances should be willing to pay more for organically-sourced products from reputable nutrition stores. Better still, they should make enquiries from supplement companies about their quality control and the effectiveness of their products in countering free radical activity.

A few final tips: always buy the best-quality supplements you can find. Never remove vitamins from bottles before you are going to take them, and keep them away from sunlight and warmth. Whenever you remove supplements, smell the bottle. If it has a strong odor the vitamins may have gone off and should be thrown away.

Follow the above guidelines and you can be sure that neither your eyes nor your pocket will lose out.

Spirulina The Latest And Greatest Superfood Defined

Spirulina is the latest and most touted superfood. It has been featured on numerous TV shows from the travel channel to Good Morning America. Spirulina is a form of bluegreen algae and happens to be the most nutritious food pound for pound known to man.

Spirulina is actually an ancient food and is 100% natural and highly nutritious algae. Recent research shows that it has great benefits for aging, cancer fighting and immune resistance. Scientists have recently discovered that this superfood has the ability to strengthen the immune system and fight problems associated with the aging process. According to Australian

    researchers:

Spirulina was originally discovered in lakes and ponds in Africa. This spirulina was then cultured and after much research has been used in indigenous and remote areas to increase nutrition and reduce diseases like scurvy. People in indigenous and remote countries tend to have diets lacking in nutrition and substance. When treated with just a spoonful of spirulina per day it was found that nutrition and health levels greatly increased. Spirulina is now a major constituent of food and health programs all over the world.

Spirulina has been proven to boost immune systems, bolster energy and greatly reduce the risks of many different cancers and infections. According to Australian researcher Anton Moore:

As we age and our bodies change and become less efficient at getting us the nutrition we need. It becomes more important to use highly nutritious superfoods like spinach, to achieve a well balanced diet and better health. Lately, it has become quite obvious that spirulina is the key or superior superfood and should be made a main part of every diet for optimum health and to ward off disease and sickness.

Spirulina is a complete food and boasts the highest amount of protein content of any food, many times higher than soy beans, at 60 plus percent. It is also packed with vitamins, beta carotene, more antioxidants and phytonutrients than green tea (research is currently being conducted on this by the National Cancer Institute), and is basically the best food and or supplement, pound for pound, available today.

So there you have it, a complete rundown on why spirulina is the latest leader of the superfoods and for the best in health it should be added as a daily staple to your diet.

    Autism and Supplementation

Supplements have become an important part of the health industry. There are literally thousands of products on the market that can give your body the added nutrients it needs. People with autism are especially prone to nutritional difficulties and it is important that they take supplements to achieve a balanced nutritional state.

The first step toward addressing autism and supplementation is to adopt a gluten and casein free diet. These proteins have been found to potentially worsen the symptoms of autism. In fact, gluten and casein, in many autistic children, have been found to help the brain produce natural opiates, making foods that contain them practically addictive! Another important step is the implementation of a balanced and healthy diet. Remember, autistic children are influenced by routines, so if a healthy diet is instituted early and followed, autistic children will likely adhere to it.

It is also important to have the input of a doctor to determine if your autistic child is absorbing the proper amount of nutrients. Simple blood tests can determine nutrient levels and from this data a diet can be successfully adjusted to address any shortfalls. Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) medical professionals are a good place to start because they have been especially trained to understand the challenges facing autistic children.

There is a list of common supplements that autistic children are often lacking or simply do not have at optimum levels. Selenium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, folinic acids, vitamins C and E, essential fatty acid, cod liver oil, taurine, and various amino acids.

When beginning a regiment of supplements, it is important to work them in slowly. It is equally important to document changes in behavior. Pay close attention to the effects of supplements on your child. Note any differences and prepare to discuss them with your doctor or nutritionist.

In terms of positive and negative effects that can result from the use of supplements, and a change in diet – they will not be easy to miss. Positive changes can include a reduction in the severity of behaviors. Many autistic children can show improvement in managing behaviors and social interaction. It is equally important to note regressions in behavior. If negative behaviors are observed, the supplement added should be reduced or eliminated.

For the most part, negotiating the diet and supplementation of an autistic child is a trial and error undertaking. It is recommended that when first purchasing supplements you start with small packages. Buying in bulk can save you money in the long run, but if you buy a ton of a supplement that produces undesired results, you are stuck with useless product.

Should you chose to add supplements to your child’s diet, you will need to do so in a controlled manner. Don’t just dole out supplements on an experimental basis. Work with a doctor or a nutritionist to come up with a specific plan that is geared toward your child’s success. This regiment should include frequent tests for metal toxicity, stool analysis, and tests for various amino acids and peptides.

There is a lot to consider when choosing supplements for your child. This process is very important and can improve the overall quality of their life. Do not rush into the process and make sure you cover all the bases before proceeding. Give supplements time to work. Oftentimes, it takes time for the body to accurately process nutrients and for you to see any changes in behavior.

Sorting Through the Confusing World of Supplements!

For the past three years I have attended and/or worked at the Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic (ASC). The ASC Bodybuilding and Fitness Weekend in Columbus, OH represents one of the biggest gatherings of health and fitness minded people in the world! The weekend includes men’s and woman’s bodybuilding competitions, as well as fitness and figure competitions, with the winner of the men’s bodybuilding contest taking home a brand new Hummer and a $100,000 to boot! This in and of itself is exciting enough, but only scratches the surface of what the ASC has to offer. Powerlifting, martial arts, gymnastics, and strongman competitions are among the many events held during the ASC weekend. It is also a great place to see and meet many of the top bodybuilding and fitness names in the industry. The governator himself even makes an appearance every year.

While all of this is great, the real reason over 100,000 people attend the Arnold Classic is for the expo! The Arnold Classic expo features health and fitness related companies with everything from home workout equipment to personal wellness products to massage chairs. (If I only had enough money to get one of those things. They are incredible!) However, always leading the way at the expo are the supplement companies. Rows and rows of supplement companies line the Columbus Convention Center, all promoting their latest and greatest products. I am always amazed at the number of new supplement companies at the expo that I have never even heard of, and also how the representatives for each company are absolutely sure that their products are the best on the market.

There are some supplement companies that are outstanding at producing high quality products, but it seems that ALL supplements companies are great at marketing their products. This makes it difficult for the consumer to tell the difference between a product that is supported by scientific studies and proven to be effective, and a product that is nothing more than a marketing ploy designed to make a quick buck. So, what is one to do when deciding which products to use in the confusing world of nutritional supplements?

For starters, do some research on the company offering the supplement. If you have heard of the company and they are well-established then this is a good start. However, I don’t believe that all well-known companies are necessarily producing the best products, nor do I believe that none of the smaller, less-known companies are producing high quality products because some of them do. If you get a chance to go to the Arnold Classic expo or another fitness expo, go around to the different booths and talk to the people with the supplement companies. You can get a feel for the character of the people with the different companies just by doing this. Most of the companies give out free samples, so this is a good opportunity to try the products out and see if you even like the taste before you invest in them. Ask the companies if their products are supported by scientific research, and if they say yes then ask to see the research.

Next, look at the product itself. If it sounds too good to be true, then it is! I am amazed at some of the crazy things that companies try to sell, and do sell because people are so desperate to lose weight or build muscle. Don’t buy a product based on marketing techniques designed to play on your emotions. Stick to products that are proven to be effective from a reputable company and you can rest assured that your money is being well spent. Here are what I consider to be the top five nutritional supplements for building a lean muscular physique. You won’t find anything fancy on my list, but you will find products that have been proven with science and in the real world to provide positive results.

    1. High Quality Meal Replacement

We all know that in order to achieve maximum muscle-building and fat-burning results we need to eat at least 5-6 small meals throughout the day. However, most of us simply do not have the time to cook this many meals. This is why meal replacements are such a great product. They can be used as a nutritious and convenient meal at any time of the day. I like to mix mine into a pudding with about 8 ounces of water. Just don’t use meal replacements for all of your meals as they cannot replace the nutrients found in whole food.

    2. High Quality Multi -Vitamin

Weight training and intense exercise requires a lot of vitamins and minerals, which is difficult to get from regular food alone. Supplementing with a quality multi vitamin/mineral is a very good idea to make sure your body is getting everything it needs to function and recover properly. Don’t skimp on your multivitamin by taking the cheap supermarket brand. It is worth investing in a multi designed for the hard-training athlete. I use Multi-Pro 32-X by AST Sports Science.

    3. Whey Protein Isolate

Whey protein isolate is absorbed and digested very rapidly by the body, and should be used before and after your weight training sessions. Mix whey protein isolate with a high glycemic carbohydrate, such as dextrose, for an awesome muscle-building and recovery combination.

    4. Creatine

This is one nutritional supplement that has stood the test of time, while many others have come and gone. Creatine is so popular for one reason; because it works! Taking creatine after your workouts with your whey isolate and dextrose combination is an outstanding muscle-building strategy.

    5. L-Glutamine

L-Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in muscle cells. It has many benefits, including maintaining and restoring muscle glycogen levels during and after workouts, increasing growth hormone, increasing muscle cell volume, and improving the immune system.

I believe that these five supplements should be the core of your supplementation program. Other supplements can definitely help you reach your goals faster, but I feel that these 5 are the essentials. Remember, that your supplements are only going to be effective if you are following an intelligent training and nutritional plan! This is a very important, but often forgotten point. There are no “magic pills” in a bottle that will instantly and effortlessly allow you to build your ultimate physique; however, an intelligent supplementation strategy can provide the extra edge to take your training and your physique to a higher level!
