Hoodia is a prickly plant called a succulent, which closely resembles the cactus family. Bearing large odorous blooms, the hoodia plant has been used for ages by the San tribe of South Africa. The San people, also commonly known as bushmen, use hoodia by chewing on the root during long desert trips.
The appetite suppressant qualities of the hoodia plant were discovered by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, or CSIR, in 1996. The CSIR were performing a study of the natural foods eaten by the bushmen and happened to discover the amazing potential the hoodia plant offered regarding weight loss. Hoodia was first tested by being fed to animals, who lost weight after eating it.
In 1997, the Council was able to isolate the specific ingredient found in hoodia that caused the weight loss. They licensed the patent for this ingredient to the Phytopharm company, who named it P57. Currently Phytopharm is working to develop energy bars and drinks than contain hoodia.
These products are estimated to hit the market in 2008.
Currently the only real hoodia legally available is grown by the San people in South Africa, who recieve compensation from all sales of their hoodia plants. If you purchase hoodia that comes from anywhere else, it is not guaranteed to be authentic or effective, and may even be illegal or counterfeit.
When added to a healthy diet and regular exercise, extracts of the hoodia plant can be an extremely effective way to decrease hunger, speed the metabolism and lose weight.

Clinical research into the side effects of hoodia gordonii has not been completed at this time. All sources report no unwanted side effects among users of 100% hoodia gordonii products or extracts. Final clinical research should include possible drug interactions, but often there are no such studies into reactions with natural products like herbs. This is important to remember if you are considering a hoodia herb combo like Hoodia Gordonii Plus, but this hoodia comparison focuses on 100% hoodia gordonii products, comparing price, hoodia content and other considerations.
Hoodia XR is a 100% hoodia gordonii is distributed by an American company called Great Herbal Labs. According to their website, they have been in the herbal supplement business since 2001. The first item in this hoodia comparison is price, because this is a major consideration for many people. Hoodia XR 100% hoodia gordonii is currently selling for $49.95 per bottle plus shipping. Customers receive free Fed Ex shipping and a 10% discount when two bottles are purchased at the same time. With three bottles the company offers a 25% discount as well as free shipping. Total price for three bottles of Hoodia XR is $109.95.
Desert Burn Industries sells several different hoodia products, all are 100% hoodia gordonii, but for the purpose of this hoodia comparison, we are looking at Desert Burn ZA 750, which is currently priced at $59.95 per bottle plus shipping and handling. Three bottles cost $149.95 plus $5.00 shipping and handling.
Hoodia content or milligrams per capsule is the next item in this hoodia comparison. Hoodia XR 100% hoodia gordonii is a 1000mg time released capsule. Suggested use is one tablet three times per day or as recommended by a healthcare professional. Desert Burn ZA 750, as the name indicates is 750mg. Suggested use is one or two capsules in the morning and one or two in the afternoon, not to exceed six capsules per day. There is no accepted “standard dosage” for 100% hoodia gordonii products. Research by Phytopharm which supports hoodia gordonii as an appetite suppressant can not be used to establish the necessary amount to achieve results, because the extract that they used for research contained only the active molecule, not the whole plant in powdered form. But, for the purpose of this hoodia comparison, let’s go with 3000mg per day, which is the Hoodia XR suggestion. It is important to note here that according to customer comments, dieters have achieved results with less.
If an individual needs 3000mg per day to achieve results then one bottle (90 capsules) of Hoodia XR is a 30 day supply, but a bottle of Desert Burn ZA 750 (60 capsules) is only a 15 day supply. This hoodia comparison is repeated among other companies selling 100% hoodia gordonii products. Product information and order information may refer to a bottle as a 30 day supply, but when we read the small print, we see that this is not necessarily true.
Both Hoodia XR and Desert Burn have appropriate certifications and licenses which indicate that their products are genuine 100% hoodia gordonii. Both have money back guarantees. Hoodia XR will accept return of one opened bottle per customer if they are dissatisfied for any reason, but customers must call for return authorization and the return authorization number must be written on the outside of the box or the return will be rejected. This completes this hoodia comparison of two 100% hoodia gordonii products.

A funny sounding bodybuilding supplement has recently been introduced by Muscletech. Gakic, also known as glycine-l-arginine-alpha-ketoisocaproic acid has been in development for about 8 years by Muscletech.
What Does Gakic Do?
GAKIC is a pre-workout supplement that is designed to help your body remove toxins that are released when you fatigue your muscles. Research has shown that two of these toxins, ammonia and lactic acid, can be reduced by taking Gakic prior to working out. The theory is that when you reduce these fatigue toxins, you will allow yourself to lift more weight and for longer periods before you actually fatigue the muscle. Clearly, if you can lift more weight, your muscles will grow bigger, faster.
The interesting part about the Muscletech research on Gakic is that there is a lot of data to support their claims (something you don't get much in the bodybuilding supplement industry) that have been published in some pretty decent publications.
How To Take Gakic
Gakic works pretty quickly. You can get it in powder or pill formula and you take it about 30 minutes before you workout. It is intended to get into your blood system within 15 minutes and while it is mostly used as a bodybuilding supplement, a lot of new users are athletes such as football, hockey and basketball players because it remains active in your system for several hours. Muscletech recommends that it only be used on days that you train and that you only take one scoop every 24 hours. Since there are 16 servings in a container, if you train every 4 days, it should last you about a month. The pill version will last the same time. Overall it's not a bad deal since it lasts a month.
Is Gakic Hormonal?
No. Gakic has no hormonal elements to it. It is merely meant to help your body reduce the toxins that are released by physical exertion.
Who Should Not Take Gakic?
As with most supplements, unless told otherwise by a doctor, anyone under 18, any pregnant or nursing women should not take Gakic. Also, if you have high blood pressure or diabetes you should not try it.
Gakic is showing a lot of promise mostly based on the research behind it and also from anecdotal evidence by users. Considering all the choices bodybuilders have, it might be a useful tool in their supplement budget.
Mike Berg has been involved in bodybuilding and fitness as an enthusiast and trainer for over 20 years.

The initial question that the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa wanted to answer was: Is the hoodia gordonii cactus safe? After learning that it had been used by the San, indigenous people sometimes called Bushmen, to ward off hunger and thirst when other food sources were not available. The CSIR noted that it caused weight loss in laboratory animals, but not due to any toxic effect. They observed that there appeared to be no hoodia problem, side effect or other contraindication for continued research. The following is a list of frequently asked hoodia questions.
Is the hoodia gordonii cactus safe for human consumption? Apparently, since it was eaten in its natural form by the San, but Phytopharm is still not ready to make a broad statement about any hoodia problem, side effect or overall safety. Questions about drug interaction, even interaction with other plants and herbs still need to be answered. While it was safe for the San, there are many plants and herbs that they did not have at there disposal and of course they did not need to lose weight, so it was not used for that purpose.
Is the hoodia gordonii cactus safe for breastfeeding women? No studies have included breastfeeding women, because anything that enters the mother’s bloodstream will enter her breast milk. Breastfeeding women should not use hoodia gordonii supplements.
Is there any hoodia problem, side effect or other concern for people with high blood pressure? It was used by the San to treat high blood pressure, but of course they had no other medications available to them and no studies have been released concerning any hoodia problem/side effect related to blood pressure.
Is the hoodia gordonii cactus safe from extinction? This is probably only a question for those of us who are naturalists or environmentalists, but the concern for hoodia gordonii and other species of hoodia in the wild is the reason that any exporter must obtain a special license. This is the often referred to CITES document.
In conclusion, while there has been no hoodia problem side effect reported at this time, dieters should consult their doctors before beginning any weight loss program, whether it includes a hoodia gordonii appetite suppressant or not.

In comparison to other water-soluble vitamins, vitamin B12 is not excreted in urine, but is stored in the liver, kidney and other body tissues. Hence, it might be five to six years before a person actually develops a deficiency syndrome for vitamin B12. The general notion is that body stores do no exhaust before several years.
The common symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiencies are excessive tiredness, breathlessness, listlessness, pallor and poor resistance to infection. Deficiency also can lead to neurological changes such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet. Other symptoms may include a reduced sensitivity to pain or pressure, blurred vision, abnormal gait, sore tongue, menstrual disorders and poor concentration levels.
Rather than a dietary deficiency, a deficiency of vitamin B12 is generally associated with a malabsorption of it. In such a case, the stomach cannot produce enough of a substance called intrinsic factor (IF), which is a prerequisite for vitamin B12 absorption. Such a condition, termed pernicious anemia, is an autoimmune dysfunction, wherein the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues. Vegetarians maybe at a risk for facing deficiencies caused by dietary reasons, since the only confirmed source for vitamin B12 intake is the animal source.
Vitamin B12 is essential for the formation of red blood cells, and a short supply of it causes anemia. A deficiency in Vitamin B12 also results in the disruption of DNA production, and as a result, abnormal cells called megaloblasts occur, leading to megaloblastic anemia.
Vitamin B12 deficiency is also linked with several neurological and psychological disorders. A lack of cobalamin results in cognitive decline, nerve degeneration and irreversible neurological damage particularly for adults above fifty. Breast-fed infants of women who follow strict vegetarian diets have very limited reserves of this vitamin, and if undetected, vitamin B12 deficiency in infants can result in permanent neurological damage. Depression, dementia and Alzheimer's disease are also caused due to a shortage of vitamin B12.
Other effects of deficiency might be asthma, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, tinnitus, diabetic neuropathy and low sperm counts. Ataxia (shaky movements and unsteady gait), muscle weakness, spasticity, incontinence, hypotension, vision problems, psychoses, and mood disturbances are the other disorders that have recently been linked to possible vitamin B12 deficiencies. Women with breast cancer tend to have lower vitamin B12 levels in their blood serum.
The causes for vitamin B12 deficiency could be liver damage caused by excess alcohol intake, gastrectomy (i.e. the surgical removal of part or all of the stomach or removal of the ileum, a section of the intestine) and a poor functioning of the pancreas. Infection with Helicobacter pylori, a common cause of atrophic gastritis and ulcers, can also contribute to adult vitamin B12 deficiency.
Vitamins comprise only a tiny portion of the food one eats, but a lack of these essential micronutrients in one’s diet could result in serious deficiency, which if not cured could endanger one’s life.
Vitamin B 12 provides detailed information on Vitamin B 12, Vitamin B 12 Creams, Vitamin B 12 Deficiency, Vitamin B 12 Injections and more. Vitamin B 12 is affiliated with Topical Vitamin C.
