While Phytopharm has not completed the clinical research, there are no known side effects associated with hoodia gordonii at this time. Subsequent phases of their clinical research should include warnings about possible interactions with drugs or health problems. This research should address issues like taking hoodia and antidepressants or other commonly used prescription medications. This research should also address hoodia and high blood pressure concerns. Regretfully, clinical research does not always cover every medication of medical condition. This is why an individual’s doctor is the most important person to consult whenever beginning to use any new supplement, particularly when there is an existing medical problem.
There is a history of hoodia and high blood pressure that exists among the indigenous people of southern Africa. Hoodia gordonii was used to treat hypertension or high blood pressure among other conditions by these people, but they had no access to modern day medications. There are no studies concerning the effects of hoodia gordonii on high blood pressure. Anyone who is being treated for high blood pressure should consult their physician before using hoodia gordonii as an appetite suppressant. There are studies concerning the effects of stimulants on high blood pressure. Anyone being treated for high blood pressure should not use hoodia herb combos, because all of them contain some form of natural stimulant.
Points to remember:
People should be in reasonably good health before taking hoodia gordonii. Consumers should consult their physician before using any new supplement, whether they are currently using a prescription medication or not.
Questions concerning hoodia and antidepressants should be addressed to one’s physician.

Magnesium citrate is the citrate salt of the element magnesium. It is a commonly used therapeutic drug and is prescribed as a laxative. It is retailed under the names Citrate of Magnesia, Milk of Magnesia, Citronesia and Citroma. Magnesium citrate is available for intake in the form of powder, which can be dissolved with water. It is also available in the form of tablets. It has the greatest effect when it is taken with water or juices on an empty stomach.
Magnesium citrate can attract water from tissues. Once in the intestine, it can attract enough water to induce the bowels to defecate. Thus, magnesium citrate is used to treat constipation as well as rectal and colon problems. Since magnesium citrate stimulates the bowel to perform their task of egesting waste, it is not advisable to prolong its use. A prolonged usage of magnesium citrate may cause disruption in the natural metabolism of the bowels and the person may become dependent on laxatives.
The effect of magnesium citrate sets in within 30 to 180 minutes of its intake. If there is no effect even after this time, then the doctor must be re-consulted, as the problem may be something other than diarrhea.
Magnesium citrate is not advisable for children below the age of 6 years. The prescribed dosage for adults is 11 to 25 mg, while for children it is half of that. There are no old age related problems with magnesium citrate; hence, it can be safely taken even by the elderly in proper doses.
An overdose of magnesium citrate may cause acute and protracted diarrhea, but no hazardous effect on life. A very high dosage may cause dizziness, headaches, difficulty in swallowing, skin rashes and even blockage of the intestines. If there are any of the above symptoms, then a doctor must be immediately consulted and drug use must be stopped.
Magnesium citrate is a very harmless drug if taken in the correct dosage. It does not impair driving, swimming and other such activities. However, alcohol may interfere with its functioning. Though magnesium citrate generally does not interfere with other drugs, it is advisable not to take it within two hours of consuming any other drug.
People with kidney problems should not consume this drug. Especially pregnant and lactating women should steer clear from magnesium citrate. Magnesium citrate can enter breast milk and thus into the body of the embryo. Magnesium citrate is not prescribed for people with heart ailments and those who have suffered anal fissures in the past.

Magnesium hydroxide has the chemical formula Mg(OH)2. It is available naturally as the mineral brucite. It is a white or colorless, odorless powder and is sparingly soluble in water. It is an alkaline hydroxide compound. It is generally prepared by reacting magnesium sulfate or chloride with sodium hydroxide.
The major use of magnesium hydroxide is as an antacid for stomach upsets. Magnesium hydroxide is alkaline and hence, it can be used to neutralize the acidic pH within the stomach. Thus magnesium hydroxide is a short-term cure for acidity.
Magnesium hydroxide is available in the form of tablets or capsules, which are orally ingested with water. They are mostly slow-release drugs and their effect sets in within 30 minutes to 3 hours of their intake. They are available in the form of combination drugs under brand names such as Maalox, Di-Gel, etc.
A serious problem with magnesium hydroxide is that it interacts with various other body nutrients, such as folic acid, iron and potassium. Magnesium hydroxide inhibits folic acid absorption, which is needed for the synthesis of vitamin B12 in the body. Persons who take digoxin or digitalis, both potassium-depleting diuretics, may suffer chronic problems due to intake of magnesium hydroxide. Magnesium hydroxide is also very effective as a laxative, but it reduces the potassium content within the body, which may cause muscle cramps. Hence it is necessary to replenish the potassium content in the body after consuming a magnesium hydroxide laxative. The diet must also ideally be supplemented with iron and folic acid.
Magnesium hydroxide should not be used very often as a laxative. The body may tend to forget its natural defecation process and become addicted to the use of laxative. A doctor must be immediately consulted if magnesium hydroxide fails to void the bowels even after a long time. The problem may be something other than simple constipation.

Magnesium oxide has the chemical formula MgO. It is a white or colorless, odorless compound. It is extracted from seawater or underground brine. It is also formed by the calcination of magnesium minerals such as magnesium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide. Magnesium oxide is present in the mineral periclase. Periclase is multihued, which makes it a substitute for gemstones. Periclase is also the substance responsible for providing streaks to white marble.
Medicinally, magnesium oxide is used as a short-term laxative for rapid elimination of the bowels, especially before surgery. It is also used as a dietary supplement when the amount of magnesium in the diet is not sufficient. Magnesium oxide use is not recommended for persons with heart and kidney problems. It is also not advisable for pregnant and lactating women. Magnesium oxide can interfere with other drugs like warfarin, aspirin, ranitidine, etc.
Apart from medicine, magnesium oxide also boasts several industrial uses. Magnesium oxide lined with carbon forms a tough refractory brick for metallurgical furnaces. Such magnesia bricks are resistant to corrosion and high temperature.
Magnesium oxide cement is also a good industrial binder. Magnesium oxide is high temperature resistant and so it is used to sheath thermocouples and also as filler in high temperature appliances such as rings of electric cookers.
Magnesium oxide is a highly versatile compound. Due to its refractive electro-optic properties, it is used as a protective layer in plasma screens. It is currently finding a use in semiconductor devices, though this property of magnesium oxide is yet to be fully explored.
Magnesium oxide is generally considered to be a harmless compound. There exist no special safety measures employed for people handling it. However, its fumes and dust may cause toxicity and allergies in certain individuals. Hence, workers in industries which involve grinding or crushing of magnesium oxide may be susceptible to airborne magnesium oxide related ailments.
